Introduction

I was led to write this book as means to help those that are called to walk in the prophetic and the office of the prophet.  The prophetic can be a confusing and controversial area to walk in and hopefully this book will be of help.

This book was meant for people who are called to the prophetic and already understand some of the prophetic anointing, this book is not meant to be an apologetics for the validity of the prophetic.

May you as you read this, find what you are seeking, may you walk in the anointing of God if you are truly called.

This book is just meant to give you an overview and insight into the prophetic arena and the office of the prophet.  There is no guarantee that you actually will become a prophet or walk in the things mentioned in this book.

This book is to be a tool for those that are called to and understand the prophetic.

I was intending to not open this book up the public but have since changed my intention through the council of others and now have made it available to who ever feels they are truly called to walk in the prophetic.

Chapter 1
Elisha Serves.com

In 2005 I felt called to start a ministry through the internet, a ministry that would have a web site and help people with Biblical dream interpretation and also do prophetic ministry and give out personal prophetic words.

In the beginning I sought council and asked some people what they would think of a ministry like that and some were against it and some weren’t.  But I went a head with it anyway and Elisha Serves.com was born.  Now I don’t think that we were the first ministry to be doing this as there were a couple of others but at least one or more of them charged money in contrast to the way we did it which was totally free. But we were one of the first ministries as today there are many.

Even after it was doing well and testimonies started coming people still didn’t believe that someone could do accurate prophetic ministry through the internet without seeing or talking to the person being ministered to.  But it worked as prophetic ministry and dreams are of the Holy Spirit and the spirit is not bound by distance or time or anything else for that matter.  If God can use a donkey to speak then God can surly use the internet and e-mail.  Tomorrows prophets could be online prophets, think about just how many people you could minister to using a web site and a webcam, the possibilities are endless and the amount of people are endless.  Many people will never come to a church or a conference but they will go on the internet and seek out a prophetic word or help with a dream.

We used to have a totally free Biblical dream interpretation service in which we aided in interpreting the dreams people submitted.  We also used to do free personal prophetic ministry through our web site and it ministered to a lot of people including people in well known ministries, pastors and everyday people even people in government.  And we did not brag about and post all the testimonies of certain people that were well known.  This ministry did very well even though we had opposition from other prophetic ministries which is normal, God still used it to impact many.

The neat thing was seeing how doing prophetic ministry over the internet reached so many people around the world.  Many pastors and prophetic people from other countries came to the site and Got ministered to as well as people from the USA.  There are no limits with the internet and God was totally into it.  We did have some of the same problems that you have doing ministry in the church as some of the same people kept coming back wanting another prophetic word even though they just got one two days before or you would have people that received what you said and said it was accurate but what they really wanted to know was if they are going to get a new job. It kind of made you feel like they thought you were some kind of psychic as they even wanted you to tell them about their love life but if God didn’t reveal that to me in the first place then I didn’t tell them or try and seek more from the lord.

Today there are more and more prophetic ministries ministering to people through the internet and my hat is off to them as it is not an easy task.  You never know maybe God is calling you too to use the internet as a resource to reach people.

I have found though that there is an abuse of prophecy and prophetic words and that to some extent we abused it as well that is why I will also caution those that are called to only use the gift when and for whom you know for sure that you were meant to.  This gift is sacred and should not be abused or used for self promoting or selfish reasons.

The rest of this book is about doing prophetic ministry, the prophet, flowing in the anointing of God, teaching on dreams, visions and healing and a few other things.

Chapter 2
Some Things are meant to be Sacred

Not long ago I went on a study tour with a well known Bible Institute to Israel in which to tour the Holy Land and learn.  We went every where that tours go, one of the places being the Jordan River.  When people come to Israel they usually have an urge to get baptized in the Jordan River and many tour groups even advertise it.  But when our group was at the Jordan and it was time for people to be Baptized the group leader who was also a Professor at the Bible Institute said that he would only allow a person to be baptized in the river only if they were never baptized before, if you were baptized before then he didn’t want you to be baptized again.  The Professor was also an ordained minister explained that Baptism is a sacrament and is sacred and only needs to be administered once and once only, any more than that dilutes its sacredness and meaning.

At first I didn’t see eye to eye with that professor but later the Lord began to show me that he was right and God started showing me how other things are sacred as well and should be treated as such.

One of the things that God showed me is that the laying on of hands is sacred and should be done with caution and I am not just talking about ordaining people and sending them off I am talking about through common prayer for another, whether it be for more of the spirit of God to enter their life or for finances you still need to be discerning as to who this person is that you lay hands on and of what kind of anointing you release to them as they may not be equipped to handle it but they may receive it anyway and you could be releasing someone to walk in something that they have no business walking in, 1 Tim 5:22, Acts 8:18-23.

One of the other things that God showed me was sacred was some of the prophetic teachings that are out there, I am not saying that all of them are sacred but there are some prophetic teachings that just aren’t meant to be shared and it is the same with other teachings that have to do with other spiritual topics.

Some teachings are only meant for peoples eyes that are truly called to that area being taught and other things are meant to be taught by the Holy Spirit only.  In this way we aren’t “casting are pearls before swine” and also teaching people to walk in something that they are not called to walk in.  There were some things that Jesus just didn’t teach or explain to everyone.

Originally I only wanted to make available these teachings about the prophetic and prophets to people who are called to the prophetic, not everyone should read what is in this book but I have since decided to change that reasoning that people who have a gift may get turned of to the book and not give it a chance just because of my view of restricting it to certain people and I also have now reasoned that if someone reads this and aren’t called to the prophetic then they simply wont understand it and will stop reading anyway.  But I still believe that some prophetic teachings are sacred including some things in this book.

Chapter 3
Know Who You Are

God wants you to know for sure who you are and He wants to be the one to tell you. If you are called to the prophetic God will usually make it known to you first.

Often we want other people to tell us who we are; we may even go looking for prophetic words or waiting for others to agree with who we would like to be. Maybe you have gotten prophetic words from people and they told you things that were revelatory but failed to confirm exactly who you were or what purpose you had in the Body of Christ. Maybe they even told you the opposite of who you thought you were.

  Things must be manifested on the inside before they are seen outward! We can't wait for others to tell us who we are or we will be disappointed every time. God knows who you are but He also knows that unless you believe it in your heart it can't manifest on the outside and you will never walk in it. The Bible says;

Prov 23:7

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he

KJV

  What you believe in your heart determines what you become so if God has called you to be something especially a prophet, the very first place for that calling to manifest is in your heart, then once it is manifested inward others will confirm and acknowledge it outward. But you must truly and without a doubt believe it; you have to so strongly believe it that even if everyone you knew told you the opposite it wouldn't make you doubt a bit. And often that is exactly what will happen, when God is trying to birth something in you everybody and their brother will try and put doubt into you as to whether or not God is birthing it. That is how the devil works if he can kill your faith and get you to doubt then he will make you ineffective, the devil even said to Christ;

Luke 4:3

3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."

NIV

And the devil said to Eve;

Gen 3:1

"Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

NIV

Maybe the devil has used this on you; maybe he has said are you really called to do that? Are you sure God put that on your heart? Was that really God? Don't fall for the devils tricks learn to stand on what God spoke to you no matter what others say or what thoughts that devil puts in your head.

If you don't know who you are yet or if you think that you do but others just don't seem to see it yet then don't waste your time running to apostles, prophets, pastors or anyone else to tell you who you are or where you are going, first go to God and spend quality time with Him until he tells you in your heart who you are and what you are called to do and then you need to believe it even when no one else does then and only then will you notice that others will start to confirm it and you will walk into it in a greater measure. It is not a bad thing to get confirmation from others but you will find that you won’t get true confirmation until it is first confirmed in your heart without a doubt.

Chapter 4
The Gifts of the Spirit Did Not Cease

The gifts of the Spirit did not cease and neither did the ministry of the prophet.

I am not a cesationalist and do not believe that the gifts of the spirit or the sign gifts have ceased; to be honest there is no scriptural basis for a cesationalist's view.  There is only one main scripture verse that is used for that basis and it is taken out of context.

You will find that many people today believe that the gifts of the spirit have ceased and they will tell you so and use scripture to condemn your belief that it hasn’t so you must know what scripture says and doesn’t say about the subject.

  The main scripture that cesationalists use is;

1 Cor 13:8-10

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

NIV

They say that according to that scripture the gifts ceased including prophecy but they are actually taking it out of context.  Paul who wrote the letter to the Corinthians was trying to get it across to them that love is the most important thing more important than gifts.  And it says that when perfection comes the imperfect disappears but perfection has not come yet so gifts can’t disappear yet and haven’t ceased.  Perfection won’t take place until after Jesus comes back.

  There are many scriptures that support the gifts being active today, it is good to memorize them and get them down in your heart as God will be using you in the gifts and you will run across people who will try and tell you that the gifts aren’t real and for today. They will tell you that there are no more prophets but no where in the Bible does it say that there are no more prophets.  Some verses to know and study are;

1 Cor 12:1-11

12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.   11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

NIV

1 Cor 12:27-31

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.

NIV

1 Cor 14:1-5

14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.   3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

NIV

1 Cor 14:26-33

26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three — should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

NIV

Eph 4:11-13

11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

NIV

Acts 2:17-18

7 "'In the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

and they will prophesy.

NIV

People have done many teachings on some of the above verses and even developed names and categories for the gifts of the spirit such as the word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, the gift of discerning of spirits, the gift of faith, the gift of working of miracles, gift of healing, gift of prophecy, the gift of tongues, and interpretation of tongues.  But we can’t just confine Gods gifts into categories and put limits on them so I am not going to go into an in-depth teaching about the traditional nine gifts of the spirit and dissect them.  People also have taught that you have to have evidence of speaking in tongues in order to be filled with the spirit but there just isn’t enough sound scriptural support for that so I am not going to tell you that you have to speak in tongues in order to be prophetic or to be used of God.

It is clear from scripture that there were prophets in both the Old and New Testament and there are more scriptures that mention and validate the ministry of the prophet than there are verses that say that it ceased.  Study them out and be prepared in season and out of season to defend the ministry of the prophet with scripture when asked to because more than likely someone will ask.

  You may also come across people who say that a prophet needs to be 100% accurate but that was a standard only for Old Testament prophets.  It says of New Testament prophecy;

1 Cor 14:29

29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said

NIV

It says for other prophets to judge the word not that it has to be 100% accurate and that there is no fallibility.  In this age of grace the Holy Spirit is our teacher and as a student we will make mistakes and if you do make a mistake then repent learn from it and don’t give up.

Chapter 5
Training

You may be called, but will you be chosen?

    Mat 22:14;

14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

Over time I have heard many people say that they are called by God for a specific function or ministry, they have had many prophetic words, dreams and visions confirming their callings and functions and confirming the things that God has for them to do in this life.  But often the many that are called end up not walking into what God has for them, they end up not being chosen and wonder what happened or if it was really God calling in the first place.

God wants to chose us, not just call us! It starts with a calling but does not end there. The Bible says; “for many are called but few are chosen,” Mat 22:14.  That verse in its context pertains to receiving the invitation of redemption and life everlasting in the Kingdom of God but it can be applied to the call of God on an individual to accomplish a purpose.

Matt 22:1-14

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2 " The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.  3 "And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.  4 "Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."'  5 "But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business,  6 and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them.  7 "But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.  8 "Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.  9'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.'  10 "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.

11 "But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,  12 and he said to him, ' Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless.  13 "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'  14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

NASU

In the parable, many did not receive the invitation because they had better things to do or they flat out rejected it, and one got in the doors but he did not have the proper preparation or meet the standards, because of this they were not chosen and did not walk into what God had called them to.

God wants to choose us not just call us and after he calls us we need to take the proper steps and be clothed as God wants us to be in his righteousness, to live a changed life, a life for God and get the proper training or preparation.  But we must first get up from our slumber and get our eyes off the things of this world and do what ever it takes, by Gods grace, to get there. Consider your calling and what kind of things may be required before God can choose you, what kind of training may you need?

Many say “in the Lords timing” and “only by the Lords strength and leading” and that is all good but don’t let that be an excuse to not do anything about your calling.  Remember the Bible says “faith with out works is dead,” we need to put some action to the things that we have faith in and if you have faith in your calling then you need to do something about it.

Get Trained in the Word of God and Rightly Divide the Word of Truth

2 Tim 2:15

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth .

NIV

2 Tim 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

NIV

Anyone called to walk in the prophetic and as a prophet needs to be properly trained in the word of God as the prophet’s job is also to equip the saints, Eph 4:11.

Where you get trained will be up to you and where you feel God calling you to, he may call you to go to a Bible school or train under another minister or ministry, he may call you to self study it will all depend on where he is planning on using you, where you are trained may set limits on or open doors for God to use you.  So be very discerning and prayerful when choosing schooling or training as it could make or break you but of course if you make the wrong choice God will still work it out for good.  But again you will need to have an excellent knowledge of scripture and get some kind of training.

There are so many programs and colleges and this and that out there these days.  Most people if they are called to ministry or just most Christians are seeking to be ordained, get a Bible college degree or start a church.

The following is an overview of Ordination, Degrees and Church Charters:

Ordination; you can get Ordained through many different ways but you will want to get ordained by an organization that is widely accepted and recognized if you don’t then no one will recognize your ordination, so if you buy an ordination online or you get ordained through some magazine it most likely it wont be accepted.  And if you get ordained by organizations that ordain almost anyone then it probably won’t be accepted either.  Or let’s say you get ordained by an independent non-denominational church and it is a real church and it doesn’t sell ordinations but the church is in a small remote town and no one has heard of it, chances are it still won’t be recognized or accepted because no one has heard of the church.  But if you get ordained through a denomination, ministry or a church that everyone has heard of then your ordination will be recognized and accepted.  Do your homework on ordination it will pay off.  Also check out your state laws, many states will not allow you to do a wedding unless you were ordained by a real incorporated church in that state.  It is the same with prison ministry, remember do your homework.

Bible College Degrees;  you can get a Bible college education almost anywhere these days, the problem is most of the degrees and certificates being offered aren’t worth your time and are not accredited and accepted.  Just about all of these Bible colleges say that they are accredited and they even give you the name of the accreditation organization that they are accredited by but it still is worthless because they made up their own accreditation agency.  The really terrible thing is most of these degree programs and such cost as much as a real accredited college.  The key is to find out exactly who they are accredited by and if they are not accredited by “Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools”  then you will be wasting your time and money.  If you get a degree through an accredited school then you can transfer your credits to other accredited schools and your education will also be accepted by your states “department of licensing and regulation.”  You also should pick a college that is well known and accepted by the churches or ministries that you plan to work with, if it is not well known to them or they just don’t like the school then chances are they will not recognize your degree and you wont be working with them. Do your homework on the schools as well as the places you plan to work in, don’t pick the wrong school or it could set you back and all the hard work that you put into it could be worthless.  Anyone can incorporate as a non-stock religious corporation and they then have the legal power to give out college degrees and ordain people, Elisha Serves (that’s us) could even give out degrees and ordain and license people.  So be careful and don’t be fooled by people who just want to make money off of you.

Church Charters; anyone can start a church it is not as hard as you might think.  You just need to first incorporate with your state as a non-stock corporation, which is really easy, you will need a couple of other people to be on the board. Then once you are incorporated you have the power and legal right to Ordain anyone or even give out college degrees.  You then can apply for a FEIN number (tax number) which is free and is as easy as filling out one piece of paper. One of the final steps would be to apply for 501c3 which also is very easy.  But you only qualify for it if you are a church fellowship consisting as 10 or more members who meet together on a weekly basis and worship together. If you really want to start a church you don’t need to get a church charter from any other church you just need to follow the steps that I mentioned above.  The hardest part about starting a church is not the legal stuff but it is persevering, finances, getting the people to come to your church and dealing with people and disappointment.  For resources on the legal and business side of starting a church go to:    www.startchurch.com

That was just an overview of ordination, college degrees and church charters.  The truth is if you have a calling and gifting then you really don’t even need to be ordained or get a degree, you just need to know the word of God, have a personal relationship with Christ and step out and minister to people and rely on the Holy Spirit according to 1 Cor 2:1-5. If God is using you to help them they won’t be concerned about if you are ordained or have a Bible degree for they will see Gods power working through you and that is all that will matter.

I guess it all comes down to what your goals are and where you feel most called, you will need to write the vision that God gave you for your ministry and make it plain and then do your homework so that you have an idea of what it takes to get there.  If you feel called to get hired as professor of a traditional Bible college then you need to get an accredited PHD from a legitimate Bible college. But if you just plan on holding some church services, doing a Bible study, itinerant ministry or ministering to people on the streets then you won’t need all that, you will just need the Holy Spirit and a knowledge of the scriptures.

Also know and come to grips with the fact that others may not approve of the type of training or place of training that you choose.  If you choose to train under someone else you may encounter people who tell you that you are wasting your time and that you should go to a Bible college instead and they won’t see what you are doing as legitimate.  Or if you choose to go to a Bible school or ministry training program you may encounter people even at your home church who think that what you are doing is a joke even if it is an accredited and well known college they may still put you down and believe that what you are doing is not valid or important.  I guess what I am trying to say is don’t expect other Christians to approve of you and accept what you are doing just because you are training for ministry, I have been through all of this and I tell you they usually are jealous instead of happy for you, they usually will discourage instead of encourage. The key is to not get your expectations set to high and to remember that your brothers and sisters in Christ are human and sometimes act like it.

Another portion of your training will come from the Holy Spirit and a time of crushing and humiliation, God will use situations and people to crush you and cause you to die to yourself.  God will use these things in order for you to learn to rely on Him mold you into what he wants you to be.  Each persons time of crushing is his own, I can’t really try and tell you exactly what will happen or how but I can tell you that it is not fun and you will spend a lot of time in tears.  God calls prophets to a higher standard and let me tell you the whole process hurts but God also rewards you and sends His love after each trial and lesson that you go through and it does get easier.  At times it may look like you are going down instead of up at other times you may not even know which way up is but always remember that in Gods kingdom the least is the greatest and the way up is down.

Develop a life style of hearing from God

A precursor to walking in the prophetic and training is developing a life style of hearing from God.  If you want to walk in God’s anointing and be used by Him, then you need to hear what he is saying and directing and get used to hearing from Him so that you can communicate what he is saying to others.

Many today want to hear from God but they wonder how.  Maybe you have tried to hear from God in the past and got mixed results, or you got mixed and confusing answers to the question “how do I hear from God?” Well the truth is there is no easy way to hear from God, it takes faith and a relationship with God to hear from him, but scripture does give us instructions.

Scripture contains instructions as I call it on how to hear from God found in Rom 12:1-2.  This can also be used to test if someone else is hearing from God,

It reads;

Rom 12:1-2

12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. 2        Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.

NIV

The text says to do three things on a regular basis in order to hear from God, they are

Offer you body as a living sacrifice

Do not conform to the pattern of this world

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind

To offer your body as a living sacrifice means you walk in the spirit and not after the selfish desires of the flesh, you make sacrifices in your life for God.  It may mean staying after a Sunday service a little longer and being late for lunch.  It could mean giving to a needy family instead of spending the extra money on that new car just so you can keep up with the Jones.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world means that you no longer act as the rest of the world, you no longer follow the worldly customs, instead you follow God’s, and you actually follow and do what Christ teaches.  This can be quite difficult as most Christians still act like the world.  There was a time when I encountered leaders of churches who encouraged me to go to the bars and get drunk and do other things contrary to scripture, but is accepted by the world.  Not conforming to the world could be as easy as choosing to stay with a difficult spouse instead of divorcing.  Not conforming to this world is always a choice to follow scripture instead of everyone else.

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind has to do with reading your Bible daily and putting Godly things into your mind and heart.  Things in our mind got there by what we focused on and what we chose to learn and let in it.  Things even get in our minds by watching television.  So we must make a decision on a daily basis to focus on the things of God and put God’s word into our minds and close out all the other things that are contrary to God’s word, examples include many TV shows, movies and even secular music.

If you do the above you will be better able to know what God’s will is, you will be able to hear from God, know his plan for you or others.  You will be more receptive to the things of God than you ever were if you just follow the steps above.

If someone comes to you and tells you that God told them something and yet they do not live up to the above passage of scripture then most likely they are not hearing from God.  But if someone follows and lives up to that passage then most of the time they will be hearing from God.  There can be exceptions to this but they are few and rare.   Hearing God is always a good thing and should be a goal of any believer.

There are many methods that God uses to speak to us such as dreams, visions, scripture, divine knowings, and circumstances and so on but no matter what method God uses, we need to follow the above scriptures.  In that way we will be better able to hear him and discern his voice.  You will also need to empty yourself of all your thoughts and wants and be open and believe that God wants to speak to you and is speaking to you.

Begin to ask God to help you hear his voice better; begin to ask him to show you the areas in your life that need improvement so that you can hear his voice.  If you have not lived up to the above scripture in the past don’t get discouraged, just ask for forgiveness and make a new start.

Chapter 6
Disciplines

The following are some helpful disciplines to follow, just like with anything in life you need some disciplines and walking in the prophetic takes discipline.

Read the Holy Bible on a regular basis; we need to renew our minds with the word of God and focus on it instead of everything else, you see what we focus on we can make room for.  So if all you do is focus on the gossip that you hear or the daily tragedies that you hear on the news or the negative things that you watch on TV then that is what you will be focused on when you operate under the anointing and all that will come out of you is that bad stuff and you will rarely hear from God because you have not been focused on him and renewed your mind.

Worship and be refreshed with the Holy Spirit; I can not stress enough the importance of worship.  When talk about worshiping God I am not just talking about singing some songs and dancing or clapping your hands, I am talking about fully focusing on him and letting him touch you as your heart touches his.  When we truly worship and we let God move in us and let his peace come upon us and his spirit saturate us we are refreshed and we are energized and God communes with us.  Just listening to Christian music and letting Gods spirit touch you will increase and fine tune the anointing.

Don’t watch so much TV; TV and especially violent, sexual, negative, depressing, immoral, and such movies or shows do have an impact on you especially if you are prophetic.  The images that you see will affect your spiritual sight, and the attitudes and emotions will taint yours. I have found that TV will make hearing from God and flowing in the prophetic very weak.

Fast and don’t over eat; If you fast about one day a week and all week make sure that you don’t over eat, then you will discipline your physical body and you will be less in-tune with the physical and natural realm and more in-tune with the supernatural realm.

Lay off the caffeine; Caffeine can make you nervous and give you anxiety and it will rob your peace. It is very hard to operate in the anointing if you have no peace and are all shaky because you drink to much coffee.  We need peace to flow in the anointing or to hear clearly what God is saying or showing us.  Peace is of the Lord.

Spend time in quiet, solitude and worship; if we spend time on a regular basis waiting on God and listening for his voice, with no other distractions, it helps us to hear, listen and discern things better.

Make decisions every day to live a Holy Life;  We are not perfect on this earth even after we come to Christ but we can and need to a least try and make moral righteous decisions every day.  If we can do that, it puts us in a better position to be used by God.

These are just some of the disciplines that you can practice on a regular basis, there may be more but the ones mentioned are sufficient.

Take some time a side and prayerfully consider what disciplines and sacrifices you need to make and work on, ask the Holy Spirit to help you in these disciplines.

A Prophet Must Die to Self!

We are to die daily to ourselves, we are to be so dead that nothing that other people do or say bothers us anymore.  We are to be so selfless that other people and God are all that matter, Luke 9:23-25, Gal 2:20

In our walk with God there may and should have come a time when we die to our self and the old man with all its selfish desires and a new man is born, a new man that has a heart for God only and to help others.  But often most Christ followers do die to themselves and there is a definite and evident change in their lives and things are good for a while but then slowly the old self starts to get resurrected again and many times we aren’t even aware of it.

God is calling us to walk according to his Word and to actually do what it says, John 8:31, 1 John 3:9-10

God is calling us to really be born of him and stay dead to ourselves but the old man wants to resurrect itself and little by little until we are no longer dead.

You must ask yourself the following questions as often as you can:

·         Do I avoid being around people who put me down?

·         Do I avoid people who seem to be doing better than I am and like to rub it in?

·         Do I always talk about me and what I am doing when talking with others?

·         Do I get easily offended when others don't recognize my talents and good deeds?

·         Do I get offended when I see others promoted instead of me?

·         Do I tend to control others more than serve them?

·         Do I tend to be involved in everything in the church and try to do everything that everyone else is doing?

·         Do I tend to criticize others more than build them up?

·         Where is my focus at? is it on all my plans that didn't work out and the people who hurt me or is it on God and helping others?

·           How is my giving, is my priority more about saving up for a vacation, buying a new car, and material stuff or is it on giving money to others and the things of God.

If you answered yes to any of the 'Do I' questions and if the answer to the last two questions was not about God and others then you are not dead yet or your old self was resurrected again.  When we are truly dead to ourselves our own life does not matter anymore, we live just to help others, if you are truly dead you will even want to be around people who like to brag and rub it in just so that you can affirm their success in order to make them feel better and help them because life is not about you.

God wants all his children to die more and more each day and stay dead.  The church in our time is such a fake mess and often times people leave a service feeling worse than when they came and that is not how it should be, and then we wonder why people don’t like going to church anymore, it is because so many of us in the church have not died to ourselves lately and it seems that the more selfish and prideful you are the more likely you are to be overseeing a church or even a ministry.  But this needs to change and I feel God calling each one of us, one at a time to die more to ourselves and stay that way so that we can actually be the church body that he has called us to be.

Luke 9:24

4 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,

Chapter 7
The Anointing

You need the anointing in order to walk in the prophetic.

The anointing comes from God, the God of the Bible.  No mater what you believe the God of the Holy Bible is the only one true God and salvation only can come through his Son Jesus Christ.  I don’t just believe because I read about it in the Bible (although the Bible is divine and truth), I believe because I first had faith and an open heart and then He revealed himself to me.  He is real and He wants to speak to us today whether through dreams, visions, an inner voice or through the Bible.  He wants to touch us and flow with us, that is what it means to worship him in spirit according to John 4:23.  And if you will have an open heart and embrace him and surrender to Him you will experience all He has for you.  If you are not a true born again believer according to 1 John 3:9-10, then I would strongly suggest that you truly surrender your life to almighty God before you try and walk in his anointing.

There are many people that believe that anointing comes though our inner being or through the earth or such but the anointing that I am teaching about comes only through God, the one true God, the God of the scriptures.  My goal is to not get people off in some fantasy world in which we all become Gods but to get people to flow in a real tangible anointing with a God that we will never be equal to.

The anointing comes from above; the anointing comes from God not us.

The anointing enters our body and spirit by our heart and through faith.  If you don’t have faith then it will be hard for you to flow in the anointing, you see it takes faith to please God. Also if you don’t have an open heart then you will have a closed door to the anointing, faith invites the anointing but your heart is the door to let it in.

Rev 3:20

20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

NIV

If you have faith the anointing will come but will you open up your heart and risk being vulnerable long enough to let it in.

Begin to ask God to remove all barriers and hindrances out of your heart so that you can let his anointing in.

Worship Brings Anointing

2 Kings 3:15-16

15 But now bring me a harpist."

While the harpist was playing, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha

NIV

Worship is very important, when we worship in spirit we commune with God.  I cannot express the importance off deep genuine worship.  There are different types of worship.  Some are; to give adoration, to give praise and thanks, to worship by obedience and giving, to bow down in reverence and awe, some sing songs of praise.  But I want to talk a little about a way that I have used to worship and to be intimate with God.  It is not the only way but is most effective and may give you some ideas of ways that you can press in and get filled during worship.

Anointing comes from spending time with God and as you worship with an open heart and taking in Gods presence you are spending time with him.

The following is a way of worshiping and spending time with God that will help you as you desire to walk in the anointing.

You should mainly do this by yourself but it can be done at church.  I usually use music (Christian praise and worship songs of course) and I don’t necessarily sing the words and dance to the songs, what I do is close my eyes and focus totally on God.  I try to be still and calm as possible.  I don’t focus on anything around me I just clear my mind and focus and think on God.  It may help to even remember all the things he has done for you (your testimony).  I just totally focus on him keeping my eyes closed and I will talk to him (I will whisper it, you don’t need to yell He can hear you) and I tell him how much He means to me.

I try to remain still and very loose and let his peace come upon me.  I then will feel Him.  It feels like a warm tingling energy coming upon my head and shoulders and working its way through me.  If you remain still and focused and yield to it- it will get more intense.  Sometimes I will start to feel my arms moving like God is pulling on them and the energy force is trying to move them or my legs (if I am laying down) and it will feel amazing, but you need to yield to it and let God move your arms and if you do, you will go into it deeper and deeper and after a little while it will feel as if you are not in your body any more (that is the best way I can describe it).  But if you resist and not let God move your arms and have control of them, then it will stop, you need to let God have total control of your body.  It can be scary I don’t know of too many people that would be comfortable with someone else having total control of their body but if you don’t you cannot go deeper and receive what God has for you.

When I have had times like this, it sometimes can feel like I am in another place with God, and in that place He may speak to me or show me things, but most of the time and best of all He communes with me and it is like I am being touched by Him and flowing with Him. I become so built up and energized that I feel ready to do anything.  Each time you spend time with God in this way it changes you, it may not be that noticeable at first, but it does change you, and your character and outlook starts to become more like God’s and you can also flow in the anointing and prophetic better. There is a maturity process to this and many levels, maybe the first couple of times you may not feel anything, but the more you do it and learn to be sensitive to God, you will mature in it and hopefully experience the things that I have described.  I have gotten to where I don’t need music to do it, but you will most likely always need silence and a secluded place.

The more you do this, the more sensitive you become to God and the anointing.  You will be able to take in more and more of God’s anointing which you can later learn to use to minister to others.

By doing this often you get used to surrendering yourself to God and his presence, you get used to taking in more and more of the anointing which is necessary in order to flow in the anointing while ministering to people.

There are other ways for the anointing of God to come upon you as you may just be speaking to someone and it comes upon you like a warm blanket and God starts flowing through you or such but the key is to get used to Gods anointing and spend time in it as much as possible and to be filled by the Holy Spirit as much as possible.  You don’t need to wait on God to be refilled with the Holy Spirit or to spend time in his presence or in the anointing you just need to open up your heart and believe and receive it anywhere anytime.  Did you know that even right now you can spend time with God and his Glory Cloud will most likely tangibly fill the room that you are in.  You just need to open your heart up to him and fellowship with Him, surrender to Him and He will show up.

The Corporate Anointing

There is a tangible anointing called the corporate anointing.  The corporate anointing is Gods presence and glory touching down in a place where believers are gathered together.  This anointing can also be used to heal others and bring miracles.  Often times a person will only need to be in that place in order to receive a healing.  Usually no one will even need to lay hands on the person; God’s presence touches them just by being there and miracles take place.

When seeking to draw from the corporate anointing it helps to better understand the corporate anointing and how it works. To some it is an untamed mystery but there is a little that we can understand from it.

The following is a brief teaching on the corporate anointing.

Often times when believers come together to worship or pray, there is an anointing that comes into the place of worship.  At times the anointing can be stronger than others.  But usually when it comes it is like a peaceful, powerful energizing force in a place and it tends to stay in a place.  It is the tangible, powerful presence of God, you can feel it.  Some people can see it (it often looks like a fog or smoke) and it changes people.  When you enter into a place with the corporate anointing, it makes everything else in life seem to disappear, even the time will seem to go by faster, and after you have stayed in it a while you are not only never the same, but you leave energized and feeling refreshed and even physically healed.

The corporate anointing is wonderful and although it is not the only type of Gods anointing it is very unique.  As the corporate anointing actually inhabits a place, even after people leave, it stays for a while and occupies the area and has dominion over the area.  The area is claimed for God and God’s manifest presence actually can occupy the area and walk among the people.  We can worship or pray by ourselves on our own and the anointing can come, and we can be touched by God’s presence, but that presence doesn’t seem to occupy the area and stay there like the corporate anointing does.

The corporate anointing takes more than one person and it always takes all the people that are present to be in unity whether through prayer or worship.  If the people who come together are not in unity then the corporate anointing does not usually come.  This makes the job of the prayer leader or worship leader very important as they need to lead the prayer meeting or the worship in such a way that everyone present can come into unity.  It doesn’t even really matter what type of worship music it is, whether it be hymns or contemporary or prophetic worship, God is not picky about the type of songs, God is more concerned about unity and matters of the heart.

  It is almost as if God designed the corporate anointing in such a way that we actually need each other to have it come.  Back in the Garden of Eden in Genesis, Adam said of Eve;

Gen 2:23-24

23 The man said,

"This is now bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called 'woman,'

for she was taken out of man."

24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

NIV

Adam could not be complete without Eve, they both needed to be in unity to be the complete whole Man that God originally designed.  If Adam lost unity with Eve, then technically he would be a man missing one of his ribs.  And how can man fulfill his original intended purpose if he was missing part of himself, Adam needed to be in unity with Eve.  The sin that took place in the Garden of Eden was pride, and pride being the root of all sin is independence and selfishness which is the opposite of unity.

  Now originally God intended to walk amongst Adam and Eve on the earth and he actually did walk amongst them;

Gen 3:8

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day,

NIV

God actually walked amongst them and his presence filled the Garden, but once sin, which is the opposite of unity, came- God could no longer walk amongst them and he no longer walked amongst the earth as he once did in all his glory.

Every one of us is related to Adam and Eve.  All mankind originated from them and are linked together.  And like them we are to be one so that God’s manifest presence can walk amongst us and occupy the area of this earth that we tend to and are entrusted with.  Especially we as a church are to walk in unity {John 17:21}.  In a way Adam, Eve and God were the first church, they all were in unity and God could walk among them.  We, as a church today, need to be in unity with each other and God so that his manifest presence can walk amongst us.

Many of us want God to bring revival to our town, state or country, and we have some churches binding the devil and demonic strongholds in our areas in order to bring revival, but that won’t do much good unless we can come into unity with each other and with God.  If we can set aside our differences with other churches and set aside doctrines, if we can come into unity amongst our own congregations then God’s presence and corporate anointing can come to an entire area and occupy it just like He does in a worship service and the people in that area can be forever changed.  When God’s manifest presence comes to an area, miracles start to take place, demons run, and a piece of heaven touches earth, God’s kingdom comes.  Part of the kingdom of God being restored has to do with unity amongst us, that was part of God’s original plan.  Each of us being a new creation in Christ, has the potential to chose God as their main passion in life and to be unified with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and when we do we will see greater moves of God than ever before, moves of God that last and forever change entire nations.

If you pay attention in service you find that once the unity is broken in that place, the corporate anointing leaves and doesn’t return until the unity is restored and hearts are open.

Drawing in and being filled by the corporate anointing is amazing and can be done in the same way as being filled with his spirit, you just believe open up your heart and receive.

Another neat thing is that you can actually take a part of the corporate anointing with you into other churches and it is just a matter of you being filled with it on a regular basis and then taking it out to other places of worship. If they are all in unity and open, then some of the corporate anointing that is in you adds to the corporate anointing that is already in that place as there are different levels and depths to the corporate anointing.

Multiplying the Corporate Produces Greater Revival!

At times the power of God has been compared to lightening and the anointing is compared to electricity.  Even the corporate anointing and Gods tangible presence is compared to a cloud like the glory cloud in the Old Testament and in this modern day when the corporate anointing and presence of God comes it does look like a cloud or a thick fog in the area it occupies, many can testify to this.

When we worship in unity the corporate anointing comes and Gods manifest tangible presence actually occupies an area and has dominion over it.  Many think that the corporate anointing is just people coming together and the Jesus in them combines with the Jesus in others and that is what produces the corporate and gets people all fired up and releases the God in all of them to move, while there is a little truth to this theory it is just not very accurate as the corporate anointing and Gods manifest presence is not just the Jesus in us but a very separate and distinct powerful presence, maybe there is a little Jesus in us going on but there is so much more to it.  When ever people have the Jesus in them theory they themselves are taking credit for the corporate anointing “after all it just the Jesus in them at work” and they try to reason it all out and in a sense may be operating in pride and also limiting what God can do, it is much better to not limit the corporate anointing to the Jesus in us theory or theology. The corporate needs be viewed as God and his Kingdom tangibly occupying an area.  The corporate anointing is the kingdom of God actually touching down and having dominion on this earth and the kingdom comes and occupies a territory and God walks amongst us.

But often when we worship and the corporate anointing comes we may see some miracles and feel Gods presence and such but that just isn’t enough and then after a while it goes away but I tell you there is more, we need to not only have the cloud of the corporate anointing but we need to make lightening and as a result of that will come thunder- Gods Holy thunder.  It’s not all us and we can’t take credit for it but we have a part to play and God needs us to help him make some Holy Storms.

In the natural in order for lightening to be made manifest the clouds need to keep rubbing together to build up enough of a charge to produce lightening and then as a result of the lightening causing a void the thunder comes from the air rushing back in to fill that void.  Well it can be the same with the corporate anointing we need to constantly create an atmosphere of the corporate anointing and Gods presence and we need to do this enough times that it creates lightening and the power of God comes that can be seen throughout the land and as a result of the power of God then the thunder will be heard which is Gods word to fill what the power dissipated. Gods’ power will destroy the works of the devil and anything else that is not of God but then his word needs to fill that area and even people’s lives.

I tell you we are not seeing enough of this but it is very available for us right now.  What has been going on in past revivals is part of it and the people have created an atmosphere of the corporate and of the kingdom of God and that happened because of unity and a result has been power and we have seen some lightening and some thunder has been heard but we need more! We need this to keep moving across our nation and I am not just talking about seeing some hype from people who are trying to copy Lakeland in the flesh, I am talking about seeing some real lightening and hearing some real thunder.

We need more people who will come together in unity for almighty God in the corporate anointing, constantly, so that we can see more lightening and so that the world may see the power of God and hear the thunder.  And unity doesn’t depend on doctrine or if you like or dislike the person leading the service it depends on whether your heart is totally fixed on God and is assembled with other believers for the sole purpose of seeing Gods kingdom manifest and expressing your love to Him.

Many of Gods revivalists knew this truth and as a result some revivals were born but after a while many died out and were not carried as far as they could have gone and some of this is do to the fact that people got out of having one heart for God and coming together in unity on a regular basis to create lightening and thunder.  We need to see more lightening and hear more thunder and so does the rest of the world, but it begins with the consistently coming together in the corporate enough that lightening or the power of God is manifest.

The corporate anointing also strengthens your gifts and the anointing on your life and you will notice that the more time you spend in the corporate anointing the sharper your prophetic gift will become and the more you will be changed into a more usable vessel for God almighty.

But also don’t spend all your time seeking the corporate anointing as God likes to spend a lot of alone time with his prophets and you may even find God putting you in situations where you can no longer find a church that is experiencing the corporate anointing just so He can get you alone to spend time with you.  As a prophet your most valuable resource will be quality alone time with God and reading your Bible for yourself with no other outside influences.

Chapter 8
The Prophetic

Elisha, a Great Example of a Prophet

Often we in the body of Christ hear so much about the lives of Old Testament prophets like Moses, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah and the great and mighty Elijah. But more than often we don't here much about the prophet who raised the dead, multiplied food, healed the sick, did many miracles and helped the needy. Elisha was the name of that prophet and he was a type of Christ and one of the best examples of a prophet found in scripture.

Elisha was the successor to the mighty prophet Elijah, Elisha served Elijah as his servant even stooping so low as to wash his hands in humility, he served Elijah for years until Elijah was taken up to heaven; 2 Kings 2:11. Then after Elijah was taken up Elisha took over the ministry of Elijah but with a double anointing.

Even when Elisha was called he was not the son of a prophet or a priest he was an ordinary man working the field, 1 Kings 19:19. But Elisha proved to be anything but an ordinary man, doing more miracles than Elijah even raising the dead two times, 2 Kings 4:34-35, 2 Kings 13:20-21, he was used to raise more people from the dead than anyone else in the Old Testament. If you read about his life in 1st and 2nd Kings you will also see that he was a man of integrity, not accepting financial gain and not giving into greed although he could have, 2 Kings 5:16. He did not charge for prophetic words.

I could write much more about Elisha but what I would like to point out most about his life was that he spent more time helping people in need and less time confronting people, sure he was used minister to Kings and he was also a leader in the school of prophets, he once was used to capture a whole army, he even had a servant but yet he was a humble man who helped the needy and the nameless, he was anything but prideful, his ministry was filled with love and humility even from the beginning with the exception of the one time he cursed some people and they died but I guess that is what grace is all about. Elisha didn't live in a palace and I don't know if you could say that he really had any kind of official ministry with an over booked itinerary and a title, he just helped people everywhere he went and God used him even in the small things. Elisha was a type as we say of Christ and Christ is an even greater example of a prophet and His life is filled with even more love, humility and miracles.

If you haven't really looked at the life of Elisha before please take the time today to examine his life and see just how much of servant and friend to the nameless a prophet should be. There is an old saying that says; "no body cares about how much you know until they know how much you care," moving in the prophetic is like knowing stuff but people really wont want to hear what you have to say until they know that you care about them. Elisha showed people that he cared and he had a great and long ministry. I think that we all can learn more than a few things from his life.

If you are called to the prophetic then studying the lives of Elisha and Christ will be of more benefit to you then studying the other prophets in the Bible so take time today to really study their lives for your self, I am not saying that it is bad to study the other prophets it is actually good to study them but too many people have tried to be like Isaiah, Elijah and Ezekiel and it has really given prophetic ministry a bad name as today’s prophets need to be more like Christ and walk in service and love as Elisha did.

How to Know If You Are a Prophet and What to Expect

I don’t know everything and I could be wrong and I am not the supreme authority on anything, I don’t think that any person really is except God, but this is what I believe.

Being prophetic is different than being a prophet.  A prophet is called by God and is an office within the church and the body of Christ.  The prophet is a leader and equips, mentors, teaches, comforts, corrects, and such.  The prophet prepares Gods people for works of service according to Eph 4:11. A prophet should be divinely called by God in a special way and it should be evident to others. Usually a prophet is prophetic but not always is someone who is prophetic called to be a prophet.

Prophetic is not an office but a gifting and sensitivity to the spiritual realm and flows in the gifts of the spirit. If you are either one then you will most likely have dreams and visions that reveal things that either come true or things that you could not possibly know.  You will feel other people’s feelings, you will have a strong and accurate intuition and divine knowing, and you will have a strong connection to the spiritual realm.  You will be very sensitive to things such as TV, music, even the weather and oddly enough a full moon.  You may see things such as the glory cloud in a worship service or angels.  You will be able to read peoples lives and hear the voice of God clearer than most people.  I used to have a strange experience such as levitating in my bed right before I would go to sleep at night, I didn’t try and do it and I didn’t know what was going on, it was like my spirit would leave my body and then I would get scared and it would go back in and I would shake as I fell back into my body. I was a Christian and I wasn’t into any weird stuff I was just a little child but it would happen because I was prophetic.  You may even hear people having conversations right before you fall a sleep a night it is almost audible, people call it the Hypnogogic sleep stage, but it happens to most prophetic people you may even hear the voice of the Lord audibly in this sleep stage.

That was just some of things that could point to you being prophetic, but most of the things need to happen often or on a regular basis.  And other people need to confirm it and you need to be accurate at least most of the time that way you know that you aren’t just delusional.

If you don’t fall into any of that it does not mean that you aren’t prophetic or a prophet but it is likely that you aren’t.  I also want to affirm that being a prophet or prophetic is different than the gift of prophecy which is a divine utterance.

Also maybe you have heard it said that being prophetic or a prophet is an inherited trait and runs in family lines.  This can be true and can be seen in scripture and the opposite is also seen in scripture but it usually does run in family lines but may skip a generation or two.  In my family on the Becker side (my father’s side) I have more than five generations of pastors and some were known to give accurate words of knowledge, being a minister was my family trade.  This was actually hidden from me until after I chose to go into ministry then I found this out, it skipped two generations and then landed on me and maybe will continue again.  But you can still be prophetic and not have it run in your family, it all depends on God as He is the one to call people.  You may want to do some checking into your family genealogy and history as I had no idea that anyone especially on my dads side was in ministry. I thought that they were all unbelievers, so you may be surprised by what you find out.

And just because someone is prophetic or spiritually sensitive it does not mean that they are a Christian, speaking for God, or an authority.  People can be very spiritually sensitive and open to the spirit and even flowing in it with signs and wonders but that doesn’t always mean that they are of God, Mark 13:22-23, Matt 7:22-23.

If you are called to the prophetic or to be a prophet don’t expect other Christians to be happy for you and accept you right away.  Most of the time you will find many Christians will just say “well I am a prophet too” and even if you give them prophetic words that come to pass and can tell them things that can only be known by revelation from God they usually will forget that you did that and still wont accept you as one especially if they have personally known you for many years as they will have trouble seeing you as anything but who you once were or who your family is, Jesus said; Matt 13:57-58

But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor."

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

NIV

It will be very hard for you to do ministry in the town or area where you grew up or even in the church that you grew up in.  You may be more effective if you move out of the area to one that people don’t know you that well or know your family.

The office of the Prophet

The office of the prophet is much different than just being prophetic if you are called to the office though most likely you will need to be prophetic.

A prophet is called by God and is an office within the church and the body of Christ.  The prophet is a leader and equips, mentors, teaches, confirms, corrects, and such.  The prophet prepares Gods people for works of service according to Eph 4:11. A prophet should be divinely called by God in a special way and it should be evident to others. Usually a prophet is prophetic but not always is someone who is prophetic called to be a prophet.

The office of the prophet carries with it divine authority, this authority has a purpose and often times that authority goes beyond personal prophetic ministry or having a vision that comes true once in a while.  The prophet’s function will affect people on a much wider scale; the prophet’s ministry will be used to affect a whole church, many churches and people or a whole nation.  Their spear of influence will be very broad and it won’t be just a part time job, for the call of the prophet is full time and their whole life is intertwined into it.

The prophet is often called and taught by the Holy Spirit.  They will most likely go through a time of crushing and alienation.  The time of crushing and testing is a time for the prophet to be purged of the things of this world and to die to them selves for a prophet needs to be as pure as possible in order to be effective and used to their full potential.  The time of alienation and of being alone helps the prophet to learn to depend on God and God alone.  Often while others in the church are meeting with other believers and getting together the person called to be a prophet will not be included and they will have very few Christian friends for a while that they can hang out with or even talk to.  But after a while God will start to bring friends and people back into your life as if you were a loner and had no friends who would you minister to or help?  How could God open doors for you if nobody wanted to be around you?  If you have been a loner for a period of more than ten years then you need to really get into prayer with God and ask God to help you work with and get along with people because more than likely that is why you have been a loner for so long.

A prophet also needs to be a student of the word to study to show they self approved and rightly divide the word of truth as a prophet will often be showed things in the word of God and is to instruct others. I have said this before but I will say it again; I would suggest that anyone called to walk in the office of the prophet to have a solid Bible education or foundation in the Word of God according to 2 Tim 2:15.

It is only God who gives the prophetic gift

I am also convinced (through scripture and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ) that you cannot just lay hands on someone and give them the prophetic mantle or make them a prophet, nor can you train everyone to do it.  God has not called everyone to be a prophet or prophetic, we are one body but different parts, now every one can prophecy but prophetic and the prophet are different than prophecy.  Only God can give someone the gift or make them a prophet.  There are training programs that can train people to do some of this but if students don’t have a true calling then the training will only take them so far.  It is like having a vocal gift, I have seen and heard so many people that sing whether in a ministry, career or at church and they have an awful voice and no natural talent but they had some singing lessons and that gets them by.  But when someone comes along who has a natural God given singing gift you can sure tell the difference.

And just because someone has a prophetic gift it does not mean that they are a Christian, speaking for God, or an authority.

  You must be divinely called to the office of the prophet in order to walk in it, even though many ministries will tell you that everyone can be a prophet it just isn’t true or scriptural;

  My Prophetic Call

I remember years back before I started the website I asked the prophet lady at our church what I was called to be and if I was called to be a prophet or not as I would have accurate visions for people and dreams and she said she couldn't tell me so that night I prayed to God and said God if I am really called to be a prophet people say that you have to have another prophet call you out and anoint you in front of everyone, so if I am truly called I ask that you do that Lord.  I also ask for the anointing of Elisha the double portion.  I asked that in childlike faith and four days later when I was in church on Sunday morning after the sermon the pastor said he felt in his spirit that the Lord wants to do something big here.  So he said whoever can please stay after the service and pray in the spirit with me to see this through.  So me and others stayed and while we were praying in the spirit the door of the church opened and this man came in and some people knew him from Idaho and said he was a prophet and my pastor called him up and said do you know what the Lord wants to do here and he said yes I do and he took over and started prophesying over people and last he called me up and said pastor this young man is called to be a prophet, he is called and I am letting everyone here know it. Now receive the mantle that was given to Elisha when Elijah was taken to heaven and he put his flannel coat over me and I went down under the spirit.  God did just as I asked I couldn't believe it and he was like Elijah everywhere he went he would correct people about sin and the ways of the Lord.  I became friends with him for a little while.  He would go into churches and tell the pastor that there not letting the spirit move (which was true) and the pastor would throw him out.  He did that all the time was always correcting churches.  He said he just felt led to go up to my church at the last minute and no one knew he was coming and the people that knew him didn't like me and they had no time to point me out to him as I watched him from the moment he arrived.  It was all totally God.  I don't believe I have the anointing of Elisha or I would be doing miracles like parting the river and would be raising the dead. Maybe though the New Testament prophet Elisha don't do Old Testament miracles maybe they just do the prophetic.  But God in his love answered my prayer and wanted to do something nice for me and show me that I was called.  That's the loving God I met, He was always doing stuff like that for me.  To this day I don't know what to make of the whole Elisha mantle thing but I know I am called and I had the man who did it write it down on paper as a testimony of what he did so I can always remember it.  God is good. After being anointed and publically called by another prophet I spent time training in my church.  I also went through Streams Ministries (John Paul Jacksons Ministry) and took dream and prophetic ministry courses and was on prophetic teams with them.  I also went to a well-known Bible college and spent time training as a pastor. Sometime later I felt led to start Elishaserves.com and Elisha Serves Ministries.  And that’s why I called the ministry Elisha.

Prophetic Gift and Seeing Pictures

My main gifting is that of a seer I rely heavily on the images I see which can be pictures in when you close your eyes clear your mind and you will see in your minds eye or from your spirit an image. Eventually you can get to a point in which you don’t need to close your eyes you just see the image mixed in with everything else in the natural.

Often the picture or image will just be that- a picture but if you stay focused and watch the pictures they may play like a movie and there are scenes and revelation in the scenes either pertaining to the past, present or future.  You often will get pictures that are symbolic so you may need to interpret them using dream interpretation methods and common sense. You also will need to develop discernment about whether or not what you are seeing is pertaining to the past, present or future or how this applies to the person if at all.  Sometimes discernment will come from an unction or divine knowing, other times it will come through a word that you will hear in your heart, or it may come from the feelings that you feel from the person or you may need to just say it to the person and they will know what it applies to and tell you.  One example of seeing an image of something for someone else is I was on a prophetic team with Streams Ministries and we were ministering to a man who requested ministry and he sat down in front of us and the others on the team were just giving him words like God loves you and has a plan for your life and things like that. But all I kept seeing was a vision of a woman wearing a white gown coming out from him like away from him.  I did not know what this meant but felt a very sad and heavy feeling with it so I told the man what I saw.  He said his wife is leaving him and broke down in tears. God wanted to minister to him about his wife and the hurt that he has and God showed me that in a vision.  I couldn’t have known his wife was leaving him not by natural means, it was totally God.

I also will get feelings with the pictures, I will feel the emotions and have divine knowings, this helps interpret the movie pictures because the emotions are the persons emotions that I am ministering to.

At other times you won’t get pictures with emotions you will get the emotions separate.  I will rarely open my self up to hear actual words or the voice of God because that is usually when false spirits can come and try and deceive you or you will hear your own inner voice tainted with your thoughts, so I mainly rely on the sight, feelings, and divine knowings it seems to be a lot more accurate than hearing a voice or word. But I often will hear a song or a phrase spoken or a word and that will give me more revelation into the persons life.  I just close off myself and my own feelings and thoughts and I open myself up and focus on the person needing ministry, you will also need to ask God to use you and speak through you. When ministering to a person on the computer through the internet pray and focus on the person who requested ministry and it will come just like I explained above.  If I am in the a public or corporate church setting then I will just be open to people in general and you will start to feel a drawing to certain people and then you will see things, feel things, know things or maybe hear words for them.

Using these gifts works a lot stronger when you are near the person being ministered to instead of not even knowing what they look like or their name. It is a whole another ball game when you are ministering to people face to face and as it can be easier.  Most of the time when you are doing it over the internet where you cant see the person it can cause you to have a little bit of fear as many people will test you just to find fault in you or to see if you are for real or trick you and that fear will rob your peace and as most know peace is what helps bring forth revelation.  So be careful if you are ministering to people in a setting in which they can trick you and try and test you if you are not comfortable with that setting then don’t do it.  Also if you do find your self in a situation in which you are ministering to a person that you cant see always be discerning and if you feel a wall or a block in revelation or a lack of anointing to minister to that person then don’t do it as that usually means that you aren’t supposed to minister to them and or they may be tricking you or testing you.  Also don’t rely on and try and interpret things you see in the natural, like if you see the person act a certain way or have a certain expression, don’t try and give them a prophetic word based off of that.  Most people try and interpret things that they see in the natural and then tell it to the person being ministered to and more than often the word is wrong because a person is who they are in their heart and who God says they are, they are not who they physically look like or act like.

As a prophet you may also see things in the church in the spirit realm as Elisha and his servant did [2 kings 2:17] and what God is doing or even what the demonic is doing which is not always a bad thing because then you can give people warnings and tell them that they are about to be under spiritual attack or that the church is going to have trails.  Also if you do hear words from the demonic it is not always bad either because then you know what the demonic is wanting to do or is going to do, you then can warn people and tell them to be ready and pray.

You will also have to test the spirits It is not easy testing spirits it takes a lot practice and messing up and after a while you just know what was the voice of God or what was demonic but demonic voices usually will give you a yuck feeling in the pit of your stomach and then if it was demonic then you know what the demon is up to and you can warn people or tell them what the devil is trying to do but then you tell them that God is with them and that they will make it and you can pray over them. I used to be afraid of the demonic and hearing from a bad spirit but through many tests and dreams and such that the Lord allowed, he taught me not to fear bad spirits or the devil, and that if I hear from them or sense them it is not always bad and it is part of the gift that way I will know the plans of the devil over people and what he is trying to do and then I can help them, Jesus heard and saw demons.  Countless times I have saw Satan doing things to people or heard spirits and I told the people that I saw him doing it to and they will always tell me that is exactly right and that is going on even now.  Or I have seen Satan wanting to do something in a church and I have told the pastor what is going on and sure enough it happens but the pastor is more prepared to deal with it because I warned him.  I never talk back to the devil or have a conversation I only take what I heard or saw and pray and give warning or confirmation to people.  Now if you are being harassed by spirits then you should rebuke them but do not fear them because if you do they will get worse for they feed off of fear.  If you no longer fear them they will stop harassing you and have no power.

Most of the time when I minister it is with just the prophetic gift which is not a bad thing because the gift can encourage people, it can let them know what God or the demonic is doing, it can tell you what they are feeling and what is bothering them so that you can then tell them and they will feel comforted and you can pray over them.  Other times it is God and in that case the gifting will be clearer and stronger and you will feel a great love and confidence in sharing things with people you will feel Gods heart for them even more.

Things I have learned not to try and do is predict or prophesy the future, and any kind of remote viewing, these things will lead to error.  It also is not good having people ask you specific questions because then you can give them a presuppositional answer that is from you and not God or the prophetic gift.  It is better to not know the person being ministered to or anything about them and to just be open to what ever you see for them in that way what you get will not be tainted with your own beliefs and ideas about them.

When I talk about most of the time it will just be the gift I am talking about the prophetic gifting that makes you sensitive to the spirit and supernatural realm, it is a gifting that people who are not even Christians may have such as Balaam in Numbers 22 of the Bible.  The prophetic gifting often gives you the ability to feel other peoples feelings, see into the spirit realm, supernaturally know things about people and many other things but when a person who has a gift is used of and called by God you will see more divine things happening in their life or ministry especially if they are a prophet and peoples lives will be changed for the better, the saints will be equipped and if they aren’t a saint then they will be drawn to Christ and become one. It is not enough just to have a prophetic gift you need to have that gift submitted to God and to be called by God.

The Seer

As a part of the prophetic gifting some people have a gift in which they can see into the spirit realm some call this "discerning of spirits" others call this the seer, it is like when the prophet Elisha and his servant saw the army of angels in 2 Kings of the Bible.  I often see the "glory cloud" and the presence of God.  I see it in the natural it isn’t like a picture or image it is very real. It looks like fog or a cloud of smoke, sometimes it is all over a room other times it is in a certain place or on certain people or thicker and thinner.  I see it when it comes, goes, moves or stays.  It is the manifest presence of God almighty.  It often will show up during a worship service or prayer service but not all services have it. It also shows up when nothing at all is going on or even outside of the church at homes or on people.

When you see the glory cloud it is often an indication that God wants to do something like a miracle or display his power.  It also is an indication as to whether true worship is going on in a service or whether or not there is an anointing on someone (if it is seen on a person) and that anointing is to accomplish a purpose.  If you see the glory cloud you should pray and ask God what he wants to do or accomplish.

The seer also can see other things and mainly gets revelation from God through pictures and symbols that they see in their mind and visions. But like above some seer's actually will see some things in the spirit that appear to be real and mixed into the natural realm.

The seer will also have the ability to see into the spirit realm and see what is going on in a place or over a person’s life.  Often the seer will need to interpret what they see using dream interpretation methods.

Put Things in such a way that they will receive the prophetic word

First of all I want to caution people to not say “thus saith the Lord” Or to speak as if you are God when giving a prophetic word.  This makes prophets look fake and like showman, what you are saying also may not be God at all.  It is better to say “I feel the Lord saying” or “I sense God showing me” this will be much better received.

As a prophet you will also need to word things in such a way that people will better receive them.  I wrote a college paper and I started out the paper with a couple of negative statements and my professor docked my grade and commented and told me to never begin a paper with a negative as and his whole attitude toward my paper was very negative and even though it was a good paper and contained some good stuff it didn’t matter and anyone who read it would not even give it a chance because of the negative contained in the beginning.  Even when Christ rebuked the seven churches in the book of Revelation he always started out with some positive things first and it is the same way with the prophetic if we want what we say to the person being ministered to impact them and help them then we need to word things in such a way that they will receive what we say instead immediately dismiss it and get mad.

“No one cares how much you know till they know how much you care”

We need to express to them that we care about them and that God also cares about them or they may not care at all about what God wants to say to them or what we are sharing with them.

This can be accomplished by not directly pointing out their sins such as if you do get revelation about a persons sins don’t just say that God is showing me that you have a cocaine problem and need to clean up you act or else, instead you could say that I feel the Lord showing me that you are struggling with some issues in your life that may be addicting but God loves you and wants to see you through it and overcome it and that you need to keep looking to the Lord and asking him to help you deal with these issues and you can then pray a general prayer with them not naming their sin or making them feel awful but encouraged.

Basically you will need to give people hope and a feeling of love and empathy, I am not saying at all to tell people what they want to hear but to simply word things in such a way that it doesn’t make them feel like God is mad at them, give them hope that way they will receive what you are sharing and it will actually help them.

Also before you give a word to someone or speak anything that the Lord gives you always try and ask yourself the question; “how is this going to help this person or what good is it going to do.”  Basically if what you are going to say is not going to help them in anyway then maybe you aren’t meant to share it.

People Don’t Always Receive Prophetic Words

I have heard ministries and preachers say that if people were to go out in public whether in the work place or to people on the streets and were to give them an accurate prophetic word that would speak divine insight into their life then they will fall on their knees and cry and then give their life fully to Christ and go to your church. While this may happen once in a while it is just not reality.

I have given prophetic words quite a few times in the secular workplace as well as out in public and most of the time people will just think it is neat that you could tell them things about their life and such but they still wont give their life to Christ nor come to your church. I have met quite a few people who actually got scared and acted like you spied into their life or something. I have also have interpreted peoples dreams in public with accuracy and they were amazed and asked how I did that and I told them about Christ and such and they backed away and said that they weren’t into all that Christ stuff.  I even told a person I worked with to give me only the first name of a person that they know that I don’t know and I will pray and then tell them what the person looks like and about their personal life and I was accurate and they were amazed but they still did not want to give their life to Christ and start going to church, maybe it planted the seed but it certainly did not make them fall on their knees crying and run to your church and give their life to Christ.

Be prepared for people to not receive what you say even if it is accurate, be prepared for even other Christians to not be amazed at your gift and forget how God has used you.  I have personally given very accurate prophetic words to people in very well know ministries and those people did not fall all over me and invite me to minister with them or come work for them.  I also have given very accurate prophetic words to pastors as well as dream interpretations which helped them but they still did not fall all over me and ask me to minister at their church.

Don’t expect great and mighty things to happen just because you gave an accurate prophetic word; don’t expect people to be too impressed with you either as more than often they won’t be.  That is just how people are and that is just how it is.  Try not to have too high of expectations of how your ministry will impact people as you are in the service business and service is about others and you will be very disappointed if you are expecting it to serve you or get you somewhere.

Also I have caught people lying to me and saying that the word wasn’t accurate when it was. Many times over though people don’t receive their prophetic words for whatever reason and it actually brings upon it a penalty.  Several months back a friend asked me to do a prophetic word for her best friend and she said he really needed it and was looking for something important in it. The Lord showed me several things for him one of which the Lord showed me was he doesn’t have a job and is looking for one earnestly and the Lord says he will help him find a job soon.  Well I gave her the prophetic word and didn’t hear back for a while but when I did she said the prophecy was wrong and nothing in it was accurate and he didn’t accept it.  She also acted as if the prophecy was divination or something as the way it was worded.

I thought well I must have missed it. But a month later I saw on social media she is asking for prayer for her best friend who she named who happened to be the same guy who she asked for a prophecy for and said the prophecy was wrong. But on social media she said he has been on unemployment for a year and has been jobless looking for a job and they just kicked him off of unemployment and now he is homeless. I thought well the prophecy was right after all, it was dead on and yet she lied to me and said it wasn’t and he didn’t accept it.  I watched for several months as she kept posting that he can’t find a job and that he is still homeless and I thought but wait the prophetic word said that God would help him find a job but God clearly wasn’t.  So I took it to prayer and the Lord showed me that it was Gods intention to help him find a job but since he didn’t receive the prophecy God didn’t help him.

And that’s how it is for so many people who don’t accept their prophecies that they are given.  God doesn’t follow through with the promises in the prophecies because they didn’t accept it.  And there are so many people out there that don’t accept a prophecy for whatever reason and then don’t reap the benefit of that prophecy.  Some prophecy is conditional, you have to accept it or do something about it for it to happen but if you plain flat out reject it then you have made your own bed.  Prophetic ministry can be tough and I just want to say if you are in prophetic ministry and people say it’s not accurate and don’t receive it then don’t get discouraged they may be lying to you for whatever reason or if they don’t say anything at all it doesn’t mean it was wrong. John Paul Jackson used to say you are just the mail man it doesn’t matter if they like what’s in their letter your job is just to deliver it. Yes there are some prophecies you want to reject as ones that really are wrong or contain all condemnation but if something is actually accurate don’t be so quick to reject it you may regret it and you should honor the one who gave it with a thank you as they are Gods mouth piece.

Don’t Just Tell People What They Want to Hear

Luke 6:26

26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you,

for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

NIV

Your will have a very famous and well loved ministry if you tell people what they want to hear, everyone will speak well of you and want to be around you.  They will even want to give you money and search you out because you make them feel good and approve of and confirm all their selfish plans.  But don’t fall into this trap as being liked by everyone doesn’t make you a prophet as a matter of fact it most likely means that you aren’t one at all.

There has been a time of irreverence for Gods plans and his Word, the Lord is directing his people back to a place in which we respect his plans and his ways even it if doesn’t fit our selfish goals and desires I feel that too many have gained a name for themselves by telling people what they want to hear and many have made their way instead of following Gods. God wants prophets who will speak for him even if the message is not popular.

Jer 23:33-34

33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'What oracle? I will forsake you, declares the LORD.' 34 If a prophet or a priest or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his household.

NIV

The word oracle means burden in this text, the people of Jeremiahs time were mocking Gods word and not respecting it and calling it a burden. There is a punishment for this and this can still apply to us today, and even though we are in a dispensation of grace God is still able dish out a dose of correction and discipline.

At that time people and even the religious leaders only wanted to hear good messages from God not bad, they wanted to have their own way not Gods. The preceding verses tell of all the false messages that were going around and what it was like at that time which is similar to today (Jer 23:16-26).

Just like in Jeremiahs time people today are calling Gods plans for their lives a burden, Gods people only want to hear Gods plans if they benefit them and their own goals, they then search out or make up false visions and dreams that fit their agenda. God takes this seriously and it shows a lack of respect and reverence for Gods word and ways. God is calling his people back to a place of humility back to a place in which we will not look on God plans and purposes as a burden if it collides with ours. God is calling us to a place of reverence and respect for his ways and his plans.

Don’t fall into the trap of telling people what they want to hear even if you are not very popular or don’t get invited to a lot of churches, continue to speak the truth in love.

Speaking and Decreeing

At times, in a vision God has let me hear his manifest real voice. God’s real voice is like nothing else that I ever have felt or heard.  There was so much power in His voice; his voice was neither male nor female sounding it was almost like a computer or robot voice having a neutral tone to it.

There was such power in his voice when He spoke, it shook everything and everything moved.  It wasn’t like an earthquake; it was like everything including the air itself was being electrocuted.  If you have ever had an electric shock the electricity moves and shocks every muscle in your body as it flows through you.  It was like that, His voice was electric and it was shocking everything including the air itself and everything was moving and shaking because of the electric shock and His voice flowed like water through everything moving and having the ability to morph anything, His voice just flowed to the ends of the earth in an electric wave.  God’s voice contained the power with just one word to destroy even the greatest army.  Just one word could destroy the air itself including every atom and molecule.  God’s voice contains the power to create because there is an energizing life in His voice. It was almost like His voice itself was alive and was a personal divine being.

It is no longer hard for me to imagine how God could create the heavens and the earth by just speaking it.  When you get a revelation of his voice you get a better understanding of the power in it.  And I can tell you, if God has ever truly spoken anything over you or said anything in His Word, it will come to pass and he will do it because there is no power greater in this world or any other that can stand against God’s Word.

When we are flowing with God under the anointing, God’s voice becomes our voice, when we speak under the anointing; our words become one with God’s words.  When flowing in the anointing of God, don’t be afraid to actually open your mouth to speak life, breakthrough, deliverance or healing to the person being prayed for.  Always remember when you are under the anointing you are one with God and in step with him.  Your words take on his power and authority.  Don’t worry if you mess up.  If you get out of line and what you say is not of God, the anointing will simply lift off of you and that can be God’s way of letting you know that you are out of bounds.  But don’t hesitate to try, as the anointing can and does flow through Words, and often times that is what it may take for the person to receive what God has for them or for a situation to change.

What I described above in not the only way of decreeing and is a little different than speaking the “word of faith,” the word of faith is reminding God of his promises and his word and proclaiming it and speaking it out in faith as for it to happen right now!  The word of faith is very affective and any believer in God almighty can operate in the word of faith but people who are called to the prophetic or the office of the prophet have a greater anointing to speak the word of faith just like Balaam in Numbers 22 our words carry more power whether we bless or curse.

Basically to use the word of faith you need to know what faith is. The Bible says; Heb 11:1

11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

NIV

Kenneth Hagan was one of the founding fathers of the word of faith and he taught that faith is a present tense word as the verse above says that “Now faith is” so faith is for the present not tomorrow or maybe next year but that Now we can have what we are believing for.

  He also taught that;

 Rom 10:17

faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

NIV

So faith comes from hearing the word of God and then he said that we are to put action to our faith as the it says in 2nd James that “faith without works is dead,” so we are to put action to our faith and speaking it out and believing it for the present is putting action to our faith.

Some people cant understand how this could work and they even believe that people who operate in the word of faith are ignorant and trying to manipulate God but the truth is the word of faith really works and if you are not using it for anything contrary to scripture and out of selfishness then you are not manipulating God.

Use Your Gifts

If you have a prophetic gift and calling don’t stop using it!

I encourage you to use the gifts that you have on a daily basis because part of our nourishment and food comes from stepping out and using the gifts we have to glorify God and reach the lost.  John 4:34-35, "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, "four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you open your eyes and look at the fields! they are ripe for harvest."

A portion of our spiritual food comes from ministering to others.  If we are not doing that on a regular basis then we are undernourished and lacking in our relationship with God.  There will be an emptiness in the pit of our stomach. The other portion of that scripture referred to making excuses, we don’t need to wait until we think we are ready or until we think they can handle it. We need to open our eyes and be led of the spirit now!

Filters and How they Effect the Prophetic

We all have what is called presuppositions about everything these presuppositions are also called filters and what we receive from God goes through these filters before it is delivered to the person or before we even interpret it.

Often filters are formed by how others dealt with us or situations that we were formally in; filters can also come from how we were raised and what we have been taught.  More than often filters change what we receive from God and can have a negative effect on us and our ministry.

It needs to be the goal of anyone who is called to move in the prophetic to get rid of filters and get healed from and not hold on to negative things that have happened to us and to always remember to see people and situations from Gods perspective and not from the perspective of our experience or knowledge.  We also need to die to our selves and become a blank open slate when ministering to others and making it all about them and not at all about you, this will help you get some control on your filters.  You will also need to search yourself and if there is any teachings, theology or philosophy that is not held as a fact in the Bible and has ample support in the scriptures then you need to get rid of that so you don’t interpret things through that as it will limit Gods ability to use you.

  A Prophet Doesn’t know Everything

I have met prophetic people who think that they know everything by the spirit, you cant even have a normal conversation with them and ask them what they think of the color of your house without them saying “thus saith the Lord, I have ordained the color blue for my glory.” Some prophetic people seem to think that they need to give a word from God about everything including what you should eat for supper that night. I have seen real prophets who fall into this error and maybe God had used them in big ways before but then they start thinking that God speaks through them about every little thing and before you know it they start making a fool of themselves and are wrong more than they are right.

I have also seen people who actually want the prophet to tell them every little thing all the time and this is just not a healthy thing as Christians need to rely on God more than the prophet and God also gave them a brain and wisdom so that they can make everyday choices without consulting a prophet all the time.  We also have the Bible which gives us guidance as well as is a tool that God wants to use to direct our lives.

If you are a prophet you will be tested

If you are called to be a prophet you will be tested in many things one being in knowing who you are and what you are called to do.  You must be able to stand strong and believe in your calling even when no one else does.

Years ago I had a dream in which a man asked me what my problem was, he used an analogy and in the dream I knew what he was talking about which was weakness of backing down when others don’t agree with me or try and sway me.  I told him I am working on it and I recited some scriptures to him like “what so ever a man believes in his heart, so is he” and also “the power of life and death are in the tongue” and such and right after I started getting bold in the dream another man just appeared in the dream and tried to test what I said and get me to back down and I knew that this was the devil.

If you are called to be a prophet expect to be tested on things that God told you and even tested in your calling as the devil will bring people into your path who will try and tell you that you are not a prophet he used the same method with Christ when he said “if you really be the son of God,” if Satan can get you to doubt who you are then he will win and you will be in-effective.

  The following is a story from the book of Kings in which tells of a young prophet who was tested in what God had told him and failed;

1 Kings 13:11-26

11 Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king. 12 Their father asked them, "Which way did he go?" And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken. 13 So he said to his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it 14 and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?"

"I am," he replied.

15 So the prophet said to him, "Come home with me and eat."

16 The man of God said, "I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. 17 I have been told by the word of the LORD: 'You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.'"

18 The old prophet answered, "I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the LORD: 'Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.'" (But he was lying to him.) 19 So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.

20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the old prophet who had brought him back. 21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, "This is what the LORD says: 'You have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you. 22 You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your fathers.'"

23 When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him. 24 As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was thrown down on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it. 25 Some people who passed by saw the body thrown down there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.

26 When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, "It is the man of God who defied the word of the LORD. The LORD has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the LORD had warned him."

NIV

That young prophet failed the test and it cost him his life, even though this took place in the Old Testament God still does test today’s prophets and even though God may have grace today on them and they may not lose their life there still may be a harsh punishment and if you fail the test it may set you back some as prophets you need to rely heavily on what God told you and not on what others are saying.

Little Victories

How God has used you in the past will prepare you for the level of faith and authority, and trust that you will need to use your gift in the future.

David when he fought Goliath had more faith than he would have had earlier in his life because he fought the bear and the lion.

 1 Sam 17:36

36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

NIV

David had faith because of his past victories of killing the lion and the bear.  David also knew and had faith that the battle was the Lords.

Our past victories will help us increase in faith and will give us what we need for God to use us in greater things.  We like David also need to remember that the battle is the Lords and if God has called you then he will confirm the message that you are to speak and equip you.

So don’t despise small begging’s and God using you in the little things as he may be preparing you for the greater things.

God may also make you look like a fool in order to humble you and build your character.  God uses humiliation or making us look like a fool it is one of His greatest shaping tools.  God may also put you in a position or place in which you could get a taste of fame or great influence and then take it away just to test you to see if you can handle it and whether or not your heart is in fame and mans glory or if it is based on God and God alone.  You may have many tests in your life in this area and you may find yourself having amazing opportunities open in your ministry and then soon after they will disappear or the door will slam shut in your face and you may be left wondering what that was all about or why it went down like that, but know that more than likely that was a test and part of your preparation as a prophet of God.  God is calling a new company of prophets, a company who will not bow the knee to celebrity Christianity.

Past victories also give you credibility, as a prophet you build credibility by how accurate what you said in the past was as well as credibility with God and His ability to trust you. So if you had a few dreams that seemed insignificant but came true then that gave you credibility so that people or your pastor will take your dreams more serious.  And it is the same with prophetic words you may get a lot of little words here and there for people that don’t seem to do a whole lot of good for the person but it gives you credibility and that credibility will open up doors for God to use you in greater ways.

Christ is the Head of the Church and God really does have power over this world but God gave man free will and man has dominion of over the earth [Gen 1:28, 9:1-3].  So since we have dominion and have set up leadership and government then we need to not only show ourselves approved onto God but also earn credibility with man as well.  The truth is man runs things and even though God does and can intervene in situations often time we will need to learn how to deal with people and do things their way as well as Gods.  Even though that is not how it should be we need to deal with it and in the process it helps build character in us and helps us die to ourselves.

Many churches and people will have it as a requirement that you submit what you receive from the Lord to the leadership for a period of years before they let you share it with others or share it corporately.  They will test what you say and it will build up credibility with them and it may seem like all the little stuff you share with them is pointless as they often keep it to themselves and may even forget it but really it isn’t pointless but is building up your credibility with them.  When you have built up enough credibility they will then release you to do some ministry there as now they can trust what you are saying as well as trust that you are a team player and will follow their leadership.  They may also endorse your ministry to others and that can be very valuable in the prophetic as people are always cautious in accepting people who say that they move in the prophetic.  If you start out in ministry and no one really knows then you will need people who validate your ministry and little victories and submitting to man’s authority will help you get that.

Don’t Charge People for Prophetic Words

Some prophetic ministries actually charge people for prophetic words and some actually make a lot of money doing this but I don’t think that God approves of it.

Most ministries say that in the Old Testament is was customary to bring the prophet an offering for a word from the Lord and others say that it takes up a lot of time giving people words and they need to be compensated for that time and they need to make a living.  I personally know that doing prophetic ministry especially through the internet can be a full time job and you could probably put in 20 hours a day and still not get everything done or everyone ministered to.

When I started doing prophetic ministry and dream interpretation through my website it was a full time job and so I tried asking people up front for a minimum donation in order to receive prophetic ministry but it just felt wrong and it made me feel like I had to tell the people what they wanted to hear in order to have a happy customer after all they did pay for it.  But I just couldn’t do it for long as I grieved the Holy Spirit within me so I sought to find a different way to get compensation for my time spent ministering to people.      So I consulted with my pastor and we came up with the idea to minister to the person for free and then after I ministered to them I would say “if this has ministered to you please consider giving a donation of $10 or more.”  Well it worked and people gave and it was something that would compensate my time but it still felt wrong and I felt as if the prophetic word wasn’t what they wanted to hear then they wont give and it made me feel like I was working for them instead of God so I stopped asking for a donation and just decided to let God provide for me.  And God does provide and compensates me, I also have to work a secular job but then I get a brake from doing ministry and wont get burnt out so easy so that is great and God uses other people to bless me that are not related to doing prophetic ministry for, God has used people to bless us with vehicles, houses and money, God has used others to meet my families needs above and beyond what we could expect.

Basically the greatest examples of prophets that we have in the Bible are Elisha and Jesus Christ and neither one charged people for prophetic words or anything else.  Elisha even turned down an offering;  2 Kings 5:16

16 The prophet answered, "As surely as the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing." And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.

NIV

Elisha did not accept an offering from Naaman and Christ didn’t go around taking minimum offerings for prophetic words or healing either.  I am not saying at all that taking a love offering is wrong but it is wrong to ask up front for an offering as that is just another way of charging for something and we shouldn’t charge for prophetic words, even if it means that we may have to get another job to support us we still shouldn’t charge.

Matt 10:13

Freely you have received, freely give.

NIV

Also if you are doing itinerant ministry it is the same thing, don’t try and push or trick people into giving.  If you are a prophet then you work for God and He will supply.

I have seen some pretty bad methods used by prophets to get people to give. One being a man who called himself a prophet was taking up the offering and told everyone that he was going to place the basket at the front at his feet, then he was going to sing and play his guitar and everyone has to give something even if it is just a button they still have to give and not come before the Lord empty handed.  He also said that God loves a cheerful giver and so everyone has to dance up to the offering basket with a smile on their face and they all better give.

Another time in a service a minister was giving the offering message and said that unless you gave then you would lose everything that God gave you in that service. Whether it be the revelation of the message, deliverance, healing or even a spiritual gift that you thought God imparted to you there and that was after 75% of the people there thought that they received a healing gift through that service.

I could go on and on with selfish tactics that traveling ministers use to get more money in the offering plate and I tell you that it is wrong and if you have the spirit of God within you then you also know that this is not right so please don’t ever fall into this sort of thing as it grieves the Holy Spirit and the heart of God.

You must get used to human nature and know that people are not perfect

As a prophet or prophetic person you must get used to the nature of people.  You being prophetic will often know the heart of a person or individual and often it is selfish and their motives are not pure.  You will often know this right away and if you aren’t prepared it will really make it hard for you to develop relationships with people.  It will also make you very depressed as most people’s motives are not what you would like them to be.

One thing you must do is not have too high of expectations about people and accept that people are saved by grace and are not perfect.  You must learn about and be at peace with human nature and not hate it but try and work with it and help people.

The root of human nature and the foundation of sin is selfishness; it is what human nature is.  We are all selfish in many ways, we were born like that and as long as we are on this earth we will remain selfish some more than others.  So when working with and interacting with people we need to keep that in mind.  People will always let us down because they are selfish and you are selfish and I am selfish, it is a fact of life, it is our human nature and the very foundation of sin.

I recently told my elementary school son that if he wanted to make friends then all he needed to do was make other people feel good and compliment them, encourage them, and do what they want to do and not be selfish and if he did that then everyone would want to be his friend because people are selfish.  I have learned that before anyone will listen to you or care about what you have to say, you need to first listen to them and care about what they are saying and then they will listen to you.  That is just how it is, it is in our nature we want to be heard and we want people to give us the attention.  I also know that if you are having trouble getting along with someone then most of the time all you need to do is give them compliments and make them feel as though you think that they are more important than you, after you do that that person will become your friend.  It can be hard for most people but in order for us to be effective Christians and followers of Jesus Christ then we need to make other people more important than ourselves.  We need to put them first that is how this world works and if you can do that then you will have many friends, you will help people, and you will be an effective witness for Jesus Christ.

If you are called to the prophetic and or the office of the prophet you must learn and know that people are not perfect because your gift will reveal just how much people really aren’t perfect and if are not equipped for this it will only end up hurting you or you will end up hurting them by acting in condemnation instead of love.  Get used to human nature and learn to work with it.

The Truth about Prophetic Ministry and Reading People

I have given many personal and corporate prophetic words, the majority through e-mail without ever seeing the person being ministered to and also many face to face or corporate in a church.  I have also been on prophetic teams and seen other prophetic people operate.  I have come to the conclusion that most of the time when you receive a prophetic word from someone who has a genuine prophetic gift the person giving the word can be reading your spirit or feelings and picking up things off of that.  They can feel and see pictures of how you view yourself or your thoughts or even pick up what you want to hear.  Very rarely will they be able to tell the future and if it looks like they have most of the time they really didn’t, they just read what was on your heart as a goal or a fear and it came true because you made it happen.  People can often have goals or think that they have a calling from God and a prophetic person will confirm it but that does not always mean that it is a goal or calling from God it may just mean that the prophetic person has read your heart or feelings and told you what you wanted to hear.

God does give prophetic people revelation about the future and things to come but not very often or at least not all the time. What I am stressing is some people operate in the prophetic gift and they are just reading your spirit in which may not always be Gods voice or word but just what they pick up off of you. Most prophetic people can usually only read other peoples feelings, goals, past regrets, and present things at will, they can’t tell ones future, at least not very often on command. Now there is a difference between a prophetic person and a prophet, a prophet will be hearing more of what is on Gods heart while a prophetic person may just be using the gift. A prophet focuses on what God is saying and what is on Gods heart and in doing so God may show future things but the prophetic person who is just using the gift does not have that close of connection with God so they just see and hear stuff from peoples spirit so it is very important to learn when it is the gift and when it is God and also important for people to discern where the word they received came from, was it from a gift or was it from God.

I have ministered to people that I did not know before that walked into a church wanting a word from God and looking for confirmation and I will get revelation from God for them. They did not even tell me that they wanted a word from God then I will tell them what I felt God giving me and they will say that it is confirmation and what they were praying for.  They then act on it and believe that God has confirmed his purpose for their life.  This is a very common thing for many people maybe you have prayed for a sign and God gave you a word through someone else, but I truly believe that a prophetic person can sense that persons feelings and what is on their heart and they then are not always hearing from God, but hearing instead from their gift.  And even though it looks as if it is from God it may not be it is only someone telling you what you want to hear or how they interpret what they are sensing off of you.  I caution all who read this to be slow to act on any word or prophecy given to them even if it looks and feels like confirmation from God also be very discerning about a word you get for someone else make sure it is not just something on their spirit especially if it has to do with them going in a specific direction.

The prophetic gift is a good gift it is different than prophecy and different than a prophet (which is an office appointed by God) using it for God and to help people with it is a good thing but the truth is it can be very difficult to know for sure whether it is God giving the revelation or just the prophetic gift.

If you have a true prophetic gift then it is so very important to learn to discern what is God and what is the gift this can be done by reading the Holy Bible on a regular basis, by having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and by trial and error.  Sometimes what you are hearing may be from familiar spirits and other times it may just be yourself or your own thoughts in which is not good.  But other times (and if you have a true gift it will be most of the time) you will hear and get revelation or illumination from the gift which is different than hearing from God and different than hearing from familiar spirits ( demons who know things).  But if you do have a true gifting then you should seek to hear from God and if you hear from your gift you should seek to grow to know when it is the gift and how to use it because if it is from the gift then you probably are only seeing the past and present and picking up on things from the person being ministered to or the atmosphere in which you are at.

Prophets Confirming a Pastors Message or Vision

I have seen many worship services in a church in which a prophet or prophetic person will give a word and then the pastor, another prophet or church leader will say wow I know that word was from God because I was going to preach on that or because I felt the Lord telling or showing me the same thing.  Sometimes it really is God but we need to yet be careful because a prophetic person can pick things up off of other people and the person giving the word may have just read the pastors spirit without even knowing it or picked it up out of the atmosphere of the church as places have a spiritual atmosphere about them and the word they gave may not have been confirmation from God but just what was on the pastors heart or spirit.  In a case where there are more than a few people all feeling God saying the same thing it still doesn’t mean that it was God it usually means that these people are all friends or very close and therefore they are all spiritually in-tune with each other and they just read each others spirits and don’t even realize it.  I am not saying that this is the case every time but we need to remember that this can be the case sometimes, so again we need to be cautious on acting on or stepping out on things just because other people had the same feeling.

A Prophet Can Be in Sin/Pride and Still Have an Amazing Gift

Some Prophetic people or Prophets are full of pride or in sin and you may wonder how they can be so accurate and yet have all that pride or sin. I have a met a few like this and there is even a couple on the internet like this and they say how gifted they are more than any other and how they will be the greatest. Some are even in sin whether it be secret or open sin and still have an accurate gift.  Basically we know that God resists the proud and we know what Jesus said about being the greatest in the kingdom, so you can pretty much guess that a person like this does not have a good relationship with God and has a lot of growing up to do.  We also know what the Bible says about sin and how you are to judge a prophet by their fruit.  But they may still have a gifting as the prophetic gift can work whether you are in sin or not, or even whether or not you are walking with God.  They can accurately read people and situations because of the gift, now they may not have much of an anointing as an anointing is God manifesting through you in which they may not have because of their lack of relationship with God, the anointing is different than the prophetic gift, the anointing should go together with the gift but it doesn’t have to. But they may still have an amazing prophetic gift.  They may also be able to say things for the future that come to pass as there is a power to confidence and pride, and that power that comes with confidence and pride does produce results.  Some of the most prideful people on this earth happen to be the most successful as pride has power, it may be demonic or maybe it is just a universal power like reaping and sowing but there is a power to it that produces results kind of like positive thinking and faith.  But eventually God will humble them.

Different Uses of Prophetic Ministry

Many people who are called to the prophetic want to try and find their place in the body and find their purpose and they want to find a use for their gift that fits.

There is more than one use for the prophetic, for many years church leaders taught that the prophetic is only to be used in the church and is for the church only but this has since changed and is also not Biblical.

Everyone is unique and God uses people in different ways and God has written out a plan for every one of us to walk in what he has called us to.  It is up to the individual to seek God themselves and get direction as to how and where God is calling them to use their gifts.

The following are a few different ways God uses people in the prophetic.

Through internet, Intercessory prayer, prophetic teams, Evangelism, Church prophet, corporate about in personal prophetic, itinerant ministry, missions, writing, media, market place, prophetic detective.

All of those ways are not contradictory to scripture and are effective but again it will be your responsibility to seek God yourself and find out where he calling you.  Others can’t be the one to choose that for you, it is your life and you and only you will accountable in the end to how you used what God gave you.

ESP, Psychics and Clairvoyants

I am not going to go deep into this subject but I can tell you that as prophets or prophetic people we are not Psychics as Psychics operate in a soulish realm and don’t have the Holy Spirit like we do.

Some psychics do have real gifts kind of the like the prophetic gift and they can even appear to have love for people and say that they believe in Jesus Christ and quote scripture from the Bible but most of them are New Age and even though New Ager’s believe in Christ and the Bible they don’t believe in sanctification and sin being what used to separate us from God.  They also believe that we are equal to God and we will all become Gods.  Basically these people do not have a renewed mind or the Holy Spirit and do not become a new creation they may be into spirits and get revelation by spirits but it is not the spirit of God.

There is a little truth to everything and I have seen astrologers that could actually predict the future of a persons life years ahead.  I have seen palmistry that has an element of truth to it and years ago I had a taro card reading that actually told me a few things that would happen in my future and they came to pass just as it said a few years later and what it said would happen was actually a demonstration of Gods love and forgiveness and is now a testimony, I didn’t go out seeking a taro card reading I was just at a place with some friends and a friend pulled out their cards and started doing readings, this was before I totally came to Christ.  So yes some of this stuff is unexplainable and some of it may even look like God could be connected with it and there is such a thing as witch craft and black magic that has real power.  But as children of God we don’t need to dabble in any of this stuff, prophetic people are especially vulnerable to want to dapple in and test some of these things but you will only find that it is fruitless.  Once I was asked by a pastor to find buried treasure so that the church can get rich, he wanted to me inquire of God as to where there is treasure buried.  Well all I can tell you is it didn’t work, when you try and use the prophetic gifts for personal gain or financial greed it will always leave you stranded.  It is the same when it comes to using the gift to guess lottery numbers or to make yourself famous it will backfire on you as the calling and gift is to help others not yourself.  We are not psychics and shouldn’t try and use what God gave us in an un-Godly way.

And although it may look like at times that you can guess what card will come next in a deck of cards or what the outcome will be of a football came or such, most of the time it wont work as guessing cards doesn’t help anyone and they are connected to material things and material things have no life or spirit to them so you will have a hard time trying to make a spiritual connection with them.

Also as I think that I have said before don’t waste your time trying to predict future world events.  The only one who can give you revelation of the future is God.  You can use your gift to pick up past and present revelation but when it comes to future things you need revelation from God about that and I guarantee that most of the time God will not give you a clear understanding of future world events.

Generational Curses

After constantly hearing people asking me questions about generational curses and hearing about people having had demons cast out of them and things just kept getting worse I just wanted to comment on the whole deliverance and generational curse issue.

Many people who are prophetic or called to be a prophet do get into deliverance and the breaking off of generational curses this stuff is real and credible it is also Biblical, while I am not going to go into a lot of teaching and instruction on this I wanted to bring up a couple of issues with this whole thing.

I wanted to first mention that some of these deliverance ministries and generational curse people are actually nut jobs and tend to see a demon everywhere they look, even if Jesus Christ himself came to them they would try and find a demon in him and cast it out of him, so be careful not to believe everything these people tell you or say about you as they are not God and most of the time they are wrong and don’t hear from God they just scare people into believing that they have demons, which may actually cause a real demon to come.  So be very careful when trying to discern whether or not a person has a demon because if they don’t and you say that they do and make them believe it you may do them more harm then good.  You also do have authority to cast out demons from people or places but also remember that people have free will and if they don’t want to be free of a demon then you may not be able to cast it out and it is the same with a place- the owner of the place may have given that demon authority to be there and you will have a hard time casting it out if the owner is not in agreement or changing something that they have been doing.

About the sins of the father and generational curses; what will have to happen is we ourselves will need to choose not to carry on in the sins of our father or mother, we our selves will need to choose to live a changed life. There is a such thing as generational curses but most often those curses are more natural than they are spiritual. Such as many times we are where we are today because of the choices our grandparents made like who they married (which can pass on bad DNA traits) and how they managed their money, or what kind of name they made for themselves, where they choose to live, or how they choose to live and what they taught their children, those things and more bring about curses on the generations because if they choose to make a bad name for themselves then often times the grandchildren also have that name and that is how people view them, or if they choose to be bad stewards of money then the grandchildren don’t receive an inheritance or a family business and are often cursed to live in poverty as a natural result of what the grandparents did. However we all have a choice to break the curse and live a changed life a life for Jesus Christ and we can choose that path and our fathers sins will not matter. It is that simple you don’t really need to have demons cast out or have a special ritual washing of repentance for your ancestors sins; you just simply have to work harder and don’t follow your ancestor’s example.

Also what you put your faith in you make room for so if you keep putting your faith in that you may have a demon and that there are demons in your home, then your faith may actually cause a demon to come and give it power, so you need to stop believing that you have a demon, the Bible also says that if you resist the devil he will flee, so just speak out loud that you no longer have a demon and that there are no demons in your home and believe that and he will go away, every time you acknowledge him and fear him you give him power and make the devil stronger but if you no longer acknowledge him he take away his power. It is the same with generational curses you can give them power by continually believing that you still have a generational curse, always remember that once someone comes to Christ they are a new creation, 2 Corth 5:17.

Chapter 9
Dreams

God Speaks Through Dreams

All throughout scripture God spoke through dreams and visions and not just to his prophets but people of all walks of life even unbelievers.

God spoke then through dreams and He is still speaking today through dreams and He wants to speak to you.  But if you want to have a lot of God dreams then you need to have faith that God uses dreams and that dreams have meaning and pay attention to your dreams.

I once was talking with a young man about how God speaks through dreams and such and he began to tell me that he used to have dreams all the time then he took a psychology course in college.  The course taught that dreams don’t come from God, aren’t spiritual and don’t have much meaning.  He said that after taking the course and learning that he immediately stopped dreaming.  You see what had happened was he lost faith in dreams and no longer paid attention to them and the result was he no longer dreamed.

Prophetic Dreams

I have had some different dreams in which they gave me revelation about someone or a situation but I truly believe that some dreams (not all) in which something is revealed to you in which you could not have known may not always be from God.  I believe that sometimes it can be the prophetic gift that picks up things and you dream about them.  There are dreams in which God may reveal something’s to you and you are just to pray for that person or situation or share it with them but still yet there are other dreams in which the gift picked things up and God didn’t necessarily want you to know that or do anything about it (although praying about it wouldn’t hurt).

One time I had a different type of prophetic dream, I decided to sleep in my 5 years old sons’ bedroom and bed, he was sleeping in our bed because he didn’t feel well and I thought that it was two crowded so I slept in his.  That night I went to sleep and I had many dreams and the dreams were all dreams that a child would dream.  I even woke up crying for my mommy.  This really freaked me out and to this day I don’t sleep in my son’s bed.  In the morning over breakfast I was talking to my son and he told me some of the dreams he had that night and to my surprise he had some of the same dreams that I had!  It was very weird but since then I have noticed other similar things happen in my life and I am convinced that a prophetic person can pick things up off of objects they touch or even have a connection with someone else through dreams.  I know this sounds off the wall especially since I am a conservative Christian who holds orthodox beliefs but it is true. God is the only creator and he created this gift and it is up to those who have it to use it to glorify him.  So we can be sure that these kinds of dreams and sensitivity can be useful we just need to learn how to grow and learn exactly how God wants us to use them.

Angel Dreams and Visions and Transportations

There are also other types of prophetic dreams in which you will receive revelation about something from an angel or you may have an open vision in which it seems very real and you actually see an angel appear to you and tell you things.  There is caution when receiving revelation or direction from angels whether through a dream or through an open vision as many false religions were started by people who said an angel appeared to them and gave them new revelation or direction.  The Bible says that Satan can appear as an angel of light [2 Corth 11:14] so we need to be careful discerning whether or not the angelic message was from God or not.  Usually in a dream you will have a feeling about the angel whether it be a good or bad feeling or even a reverence and respect feeling, if you don’t have a good feeling about the angel then more than likely it wasn’t an angel of the Lord.  It can be the same with an open vision how did you feel about the angel even afterward, do you have peace and rest about the whole thing or is there an unrest feeling in your spirit.  Also does the message or revelation contradict the scriptures?

You may even receive revelation by being transported to what some call the third heaven and in that also you will need to be cautious and discerning as often people who say that they have visited the third heaven did not at all but instead wanted to so bad and had a delusional experience.  It may have seemed real to them but it was just hype and delusion.  Most of the time if someone is really taken to the third heaven they will not be seeking it out and focusing on how great it would be to go there or asking God to take them there, it will just be something that happens and it will be very physically and emotionally tiring and they will be shook up for a couple of days and after that they will most likely ask God not to take them there anymore or at least for a while as it can be a bit traumatic.  So be careful not to be seeking out third heaven transportations as if God is going to take you there it will just happen and the last thing you want is to think that you had a real third heaven experience and to find out years later that it was just hype and a delusion especially if you told others about this and told them of some new knowledge you thought you received through this experience.

Not all dreams are from God

Not all dreams come from God, some dreams do but others can come from our souls, Satan, Medication and body chemicals, prophetic gifting and so forth.  What I want to make you aware of is that there are some dreams that can come from demons as an attack to weaken you.  They may not seem real bad but Satan can use a dream to gain access to your heart in order to cause you to fall into sin.  God uses dreams to impart wisdom and anointing to us so why cant Satan! Let me give you an example; Let's say you have overcome an addiction to drugs or alcohol and you have been free from it for a while then one night you go to sleep and you dream that you go to the bar and drink and then a drug dealer is sitting next to you on the bar stool and he gives you some drugs and you accept them and feel great. Then when you wake up you ponder that dream and meditate on it, now the next time you are faced with temptation in that area you are weaker because you entertained that dream thus receiving the impartation that the dream was trying to impart.  Now that was just an example I myself never had an alcohol or drug problem (I have had other issues though) but I thought that illustration would be good because most people today have some knowledge of alcoholism and drug abuse.  But it is the same with any weak area in our lives whether is be pride, gossip, anger or lust, Satan can use a dream to weaken us further.  So the next time you have a dream and it is illustrating you falling into sin or a weak area in your life and you really don’t know where it came from just rebuke it, cast it out of your thoughts and don’t try and interpret it or meditate on it.

People who use black magic can also gain access to your dreams and enter them and try and weaken you but that is a subject that I won’t get into at this time but it is real and does happen.

Just Because a Dream Comes True It Does Not Mean It Was Gods Plan

I have had many dreams in which I dream something and the events in the dream actually happen.  Then when they do happen I think wow now I know that this was Gods plan and I am and was in his will and plan.  But I caution people on this, because I have found that later on the events weren’t Gods plan at all and I had made a mistake and yes the dream came true but it wasn’t Gods plan and confirmation it was just a dream that I had that told me of events that would happen, it did not condone what happened it just showed what is going to happen.  So again I caution anyone to not be quick to think that God has confirmed or condoned something just because you or someone else dreamed about it and it came true.

Dream Interpretation

Understanding dreams may not come easy for most people and it does take time to learn.  One of the best things that you can do is pay attention to how God speaks to you through your dreams and learn from it. I do recommend the following books as a means of better understanding symbolism and methods of interpreting dreams; "Exploring the World of Dreams by Benny Thomas,"  "Understanding the Dreams You Dream by Iraa Milligan," and "Dreams and Visions by Jane Hamon," "Dictionary Of Biblical Imagery by Leland Ryken." These are all wonderful books that will help you, but also remember that interpretation comes from the Lord and a relationship with him.

Some things to remember when trying to understand your dreams are not to get lost in all the little details of a dream, sometimes little details can be important but not always.  Try and find out what the main subject or theme of the dream is this is especially important to communicate when trying to help others with their dreams.

Remember that not all dreams come from God and also be careful who you take your dreams too, everyone thinks that they can interpret dreams and most people who think that they are prophetic will go out of their way to give you their interpretation and most of the time it won’t be the right one.  I have had many people give me the wrong interpretation of a dream and they can really be offensive to you in what they tell you, I have even had a people try and tell me to do something un-scriptural through dream interpretations.

Dreams are almost always symbolic but often they have some things that are literal in them but when seeking to interpret them it is good to look for the symbolism in the dream before looking for the literal such as if you dream about a death it is almost to be viewed as symbolic unless you have a history of death dreams coming true literally.

Dreams can be like a riddle, try and ask questions about things in the dream like why did this take place at the school instead of at the bank and so on.  Also ask yourself what certain things mean to you such as what do dogs mean to you if you dreamt of a dog, do you even like dogs? Or do you dislike them?  Dogs often represent best friends. Try and remember how you felt in the dream about certain things.  Colors can also be important but it all depends if the color stood out to the dreamer and if they knew that that felt important often times people get lost trying to figure out the meaning of colors and miss the meaning of the dream so don’t spend to much time focusing on colors.

Also who are the people in the dream?  Do you know them?  What do they look like?  How do you feel about the person in the dream?  Is the person a Pastor, prophet or evangelist?  Is it a grandfather of mother?

Often if it is a pastor then the subject and message of the dream has to do with pastoral issues or the church, if it is a prophet speaking then the message in the dream may be prophetic and revelatory.  If a grandfather is in the dream then the dream may have a generational theme to it or a mother could represent the Holy Spirit if the person is a Christian and faceless people also can represent the Holy Spirit.

Where is the dream taking place?  Is it in a school, a house, outside, on a boat, or mountain?  Schools often are symbolic of learning so if you dreamt about going back to school then your dream is revealing that you are or will be learning a lesson or something over again or if you dream that you are back in school but you really aren’t required to be there then your dream may mean that you really already have learned the lesson and know better but are choosing to not move on and learn something new and now find your self learning the same things over again but you could start anytime learning something new.

Are there vehicles in the dream?  Vehicles can be symbolic of a career or ministry.  Money can be symbolic of resources.

Also where are you in the dream?  Are you the main character- then the dream may be about you, are you observing and only watching -then the dream may not be about you, are you participating -then the dream may not be directly about you but it may effect you.

God speaks to us in terms and in symbols that we can understand so if you are trying to help someone else out with their dream then you will need to known what symbols mean to them.

Just like interpreting a passage of scripture we need to always consider context in the dream to help us see the meaning we also need to be prayerful and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit when trying to find the meaning to a dream you may get an unction from the Holy Spirit that will help you identify the meaning or will the Holy Spirit will cause certain things to weigh heavy on your spirit.

A book that will get you used to different symbols in a dream is "Understanding the Dreams You Dream by Iraa Milligan," this book is not an absolute and the symbols don’t always mean what they say in the book it just gives you an idea of how symbols work and how they can be applied, the symbols also work with visions and interpreting things that you may see for people that you are ministering to.

Chapter 10

  Healing Anointing

Often prophets walk in a healing anointing we can see this in the Old and New Testaments so be open to the possibility that God may be calling you to walk in a healing gift.

Before you begin to walk in a healing anointing there are some other things that you must get down in your spirit; one of the things is being sure of what scripture says about healing.

I believe in "Sola-Scriptura" which means that the Bible is the final authority.  In a world where there are very few absolutes, we can be sure that the Bible is an absolute.  And it is sad to say but visions, dreams, prophecies and teachings on healing are not an absolute.  Therefore we need to compare everything we hear to the Holy Bible and know what it says.  That is a precaution that we need to make because we have not reached perfection yet and man is fallible.

It is very important to interpret the Bible correctly.  I firmly believe that we should interpret the words of the Bible in its context.  Its context being the author’s original intended purpose, the original intended audience of the text, the historical context, the cultural context, the grammatical context, even the geographical context.  When we interpret a verse we need to keep it in the context of the chapter it is found in.

But don’t try so hard to keep it context that you kill the Holy Spirit or snuff out possible applications of the text.  Sometimes hermeneutics can be a hindrance rather than a help.  A while back after taking a hermeneutics course and learning the so called correct way and methods of studying scripture, suddenly the joy of reading the Bible and the life and nutrients that I received soon died.  I got so indoctrinated through Bible College only seeing the scriptures as literature and became fearful of taking something out of context.  This caused my devotional life to fail and caused me to interpret the scriptures in such a way that it killed the Holy Spirit and I started to sound like a Pharisee and Sadducee from the time of Christ.  This is not a good thing and if you become like this it will be very difficult for you to flow in a healing anointing, so don’t get too critical about keeping things in context and correct inductive study methods.

I recommend to study out of the NIV or the NASB translations.  They are the most accurate and true to the original Hebrew and Greek, but the King James is still good.  I have heard some people say that King James falsified the Bible and he changed things, but I can assure you that is not true.  Our modern translations are very accurate and I personally own a translation called the Geneva Bible which was written and translated before King James authorized his translation and there are many other translations that came before King James.

These translations are no different than his. King James did not falsify anything, if you ask true Bible scholars who have personally studied some of the earlier manuscripts (some dating back to 100 AD for the New Testament and 300 BC for the Old Testament) that we have today, they will tell you the same thing.  Before you listen to the people who say that King James falsified the Bible and that our modern translations are false, study it out for yourself.  Most of the people, who say these things, do so to falsify doctrines and promote their own selfish agendas.  We have more than a few Christian books today floating around evangelical circles that promote the Bible as being falsified and biased, these books are just not true and promote their own selfish agendas.  Always search everything out for yourself before taking someone’s word for it, it doesn’t matter how many PhDs the author has or who the author is promoted by.

Is Healing Biblical according to Isaiah 53 or the rest of the Bible?

God still heals today and I believe it is in His nature to want to heal all of us and to prosper us, but what does scripture have to say about this. Is it Biblical to believe according to Isaiah 53 that our physical healing was part of the atonement, or what does the rest of the Bible say about healing.

I have been back and forth on this issue many times going from the traditional view that the atonement was only for our spiritual healing; to the Charismatic view which says that it was for our spiritual and physical healing. Most people will go back and forth on these issues in their lifetime.

God works through our faith and it takes faith to please God and what you put your faith in you make room for.  So which view do you want to put your faith in? Most likely if you don’t believe that God heals today and that the atonement wasn’t for our physical healing then you won't be healed physically or be used to heal others.

Isa 53:4-5

4 Surely he took up our infirmities

and carried our sorrows,

yet we considered him stricken by God,

smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

NIV

The context of the passage seems to deal with sin.  The major themes of Isaiah seem to deal with sin. Chapter 39 it does deal with the redemption of physical sickness somehow associated with sin.  So when examining 53:5 in the light of the above context, it does appear logical that what we were healed from was sin, and the punishment caused by it, which is physical sickness.  The verse logically implies that we are healed from the “punishment”. The Bible clearly states that we are punished for sin and a result of sin is sickness.  Sickness is part of the punishment of sin which is backed up theologically.

Christ came to set us free from the punishment, he took that upon himself!

Looking at Mathew 8:17;

Matt 8:16-17

17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

"He took up our infirmities

and carried our diseases."

NIV

After examining that passage it is clear that is an application of Isa 53:4 and the context of it is clearly about physical healing.  When Christ came he took up our infirmities and carried our diseases, that was much of his ministry and purpose and it is associated with the atonement and the anointing.

The word “heal” in verse five means “to make whole” or “mend,” that definition can be applied to either spiritual or physical healing.  I will not go deep into word studies in fear that I fall into “root word fallacies” or the like.  But it is clear that the word heal can and does apply to both physical and spiritual healing.  And after examining other words in the immediate context you find that they too can apply to either spiritual or physical healing.

The Bible's teaching of healing parallels its teaching of salvation.  Over and over in scripture there is a parallel between healing and salvation.  One very clearly can see that parallel in the account of Moses and the bronze snake;

Num 21:6-9

6 Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people.

8 The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

NIV

Healing is parallel to salvation; if it wasn’t then God would not have used the account of the snake as an example.

Christ died for both our physical and spiritual redemption.  Physical healing is the nature of God.

We can also look at other scriptures such as James 5:14 in which believers are told that if they are sick to go to elders of the church for prayer.  If God doesn’t want to heal you today, then why would James give instruction in the scriptures to get healed?  Also read about the great commission and healing the sick (Mark 16:18) and gifts of healing found in 1 Cor 12:9, 1 Cor 12:28.

Many denominations believe that the gifts of the spirit have ceased.  The main scripture that they use to back up this belief is found in 1 Cor 13:8-10

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

NIV

Some say that this scripture is proof that the gifts of the spirit have ceased after the forming of the early church, but nowhere in that text does it actually say that.  They take that out of the context of Paul, pointing out the importance of love over gifts and they fail to see that perfection has not come yet and won’t come until Christ returns.

The gifts of the spirit did not cease and are still in operation today and the anointing is available to all believers.

Today the Holy Spirit, including the gifts of the spirit and the anointing are available to all who seek.

Acts 2:17-18

17 "'In the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

and they will prophesy.

NIV

The availability of the Spirit started 2000 years ago in the book of Acts and it continues today.

The word of God says that God wants to heal us and that healing is for today, the word of God is clear that the anointing and the gifts of the spirit are available today.  Go through the word of God on your own and study these things out, in that way you will know for yourself what the scriptures say.

If you have any doubt in you mind whether or not God still wants to heal today, or about the availability of the gifts and spirit for believers today, you must settle it before you try and walk in a healing anointing. For a person in doubt is not a person of faith and it takes faith to walk in the things of God.

How to Flow in a Healing Anointing

There are a several types of healing anointings and healing gifts and there are many healing ministries out there that teach a little on healing but I have found few that will actually specifically explain how to walk in a healing anointing. There is a need right now for more teaching on walking in a healing gift.

One kind of anointing consists of taking authority over the illness using the name of Jesus Christ. But I am going to focus on another type of healing; healing by flowing in the anointing of God, what I am going to try and explain is what Elisha may have used in 2 Kings 4:32-35.

The first thing that you will need to do is open up your heart and have faith and believe that God can fill you or re-fill you with His spirit and anointing anywhere, anytime.  It doesn’t matter where you are at, or when, he can, and will fill you up with His spirit.

What happens when he fills you with His spirit or anointing is much like when He fills you as described in a previous chapter while worshiping.  You need to practice experiencing God’s presence filling you up on a regular basis and believe that he can do it.  You don’t need to be in a church to be filled or have anyone lay hands on you, you just need to open your heart believe and receive any where any time.

Then, once you change your thinking and start believing this, you will need be filled overflowing with his presence, his anointing.

You ask God to fill you with his spirit and then you must be still and lift your arms and hands a little and open your heart and receive from him.  At first you may need to use worship music to help open your heart.  You need to continue to focus on receiving God’s anointing and believing that you are receiving it.

You will start to feel a warm overwhelming tingling coming down from the top of your head (it always begins from your head or shoulders) if you let it, and don’t resist, then it will get stronger and flow to your heart area and then out to the rest of your body.  Some people say that they know what it is like to be filled and such but most of the time they really have no idea.  They think that they are being filled but in reality it is just hype or they just feel good.  But if you are truly being touched by God it will be overwhelming and it will flow through your veins and you will need to surrender every part of you and your will to it or it will stop.  It is very powerful and you even feel it flowing through you and pulling on your arms and trying to move through your muscles.

You will need to get used to letting it flow through your body, at first you may have trouble letting it flow through you but you must relax and not resist.  After you do this enough times it will become more natural and it will be easier for God to flow through you and use you, and you may get to a point in which you won’t need music or to worship.  You will just be able to receive the anointing instantly and let it flow through you instantly.  Sometimes it can be more powerful than other times, it all depends of how much you can handle and what God is willing to give and wants to do.

You will need to be filled on a regular basis and get used to being touched by God and surrendering your flesh and will over to him and after a while it will become easier to do and then you can begin to transfer the anointing to others.

To transfer it to others for healing, you will need to be close to them.  Receive the anointing from God as previously mentioned, and then after it flows from your head or shoulders to your heart and all over, then you will need to either place your hand on the person that needs to be healed (it doesn’t matter where) or you can sometimes just put your hand near them.

Then you will need to visualize the anointing going out of your hand into them, it helps to visualize the anointing as a bright light.  But continue to visualize the anointing going from you, out your hands, to them (you could also visualize it going to a specific area of their body and visualize it lighting up that area).  You will need to continue to focus and visualize the anointing going out of you into them and healing them.

The person being prayed for will also need to open up their heart and receive this anointing that is coming through you.  If they are receiving it you will feel it get even stronger in you and you will actually feel it flow to them but if they are not receiving it the anointing in you it will get weaker and you won’t feel it flow.  In a case in which they are not receiving it you may need to talk with them to calm them and tell them that it is starting to flow and to open their heart and receive it.  Sometimes if you are sensitive to Gods voice you will get a word or unction from God as to what is blocking them from receiving it or God will show you what to pray for or speak so they can receive it.

This method of healing can also be used without the person being present by just visualizing the person while praying for them but they will need to consent in order to receive it.  Another thing you can do while the anointing is flowing from you to them is speak life or healing or command in the name of Jesus that they be healed, just be sensitive to the spirit of God and it will lead you. You can also use this method if you yourself are sick, you would just get filled and touched by God and his presence and power touching you will help cure your illness as you profess that you are being healed.

Not everyone is able to flow in a healing anointing such as this.  The truth is some people have a natural God given gift to receive from God and walk in this, while others just aren’t wired that way.  So if this doesn’t work for you it may be that you just aren’t gifted in this way.  Remember the world would be a very boring place if everyone were exactly the same; we all make up many different parts with many different gifts that make up one body.

And again this is not the only way for God to use you to heal others, people can be healed by their faith in what you say or in God or God may just have you lay hands on them and you wont feel anything at all but they may be healed anyway, so if this doesn’t seem to work for you then just let God lead you and guide you into how he wants to use you to heal others.

One other way that God may use you to be a vessel for healing is you may have someone come to you with a neck problem or back problem and when you lay hands on them to let the anointing flow through you, you may have an unction, urge or divine knowing to actually pinch them in a certain place on their neck or even apply pressure to that place by pushing on it with your knuckle or finger, you may even get an unction or prompting from the Holy Spirit to actually tap them in that area with your hand.  God has used me in this way in the past and it usually works but you need to trust God and do it as sometimes it may not make sense.  Also note that if the area is an inappropriate area to be touching then don’t do it, only do this to appropriate areas.

Chapter 11
The Church

Bouncing From Church to Church

If you are prophetic and are thinking about fitting in to a new church or visiting one always remember that it is not easy to just pick up and go somewhere else, it is kind of like joining a new high school and being the new kid.  You must make the transition smoothly and know what to do and what not to do.

I have been a Rural Mail Carrier it was my secular job.  My job was to deliver the mail to rural homes.  It was my job to bring packages that were to large for mail boxes to the door of the homes or farms that I served.  I had a legal right to go on the property of the homeowner and put the package on their door step or if I needed a signature I had a right to enter their property and knock on their door and ask for a signature.  But most farms and country homes have dogs, these dogs are very territorial and believe that they are protecting their masters or their territory.  The dogs will often bite you or try and bite and wont let you get close to the house.  Now what I need to do as a mail man is to not appear as a threat to the dog.  I need to approach with caution and a positive attitude (dogs can sense fear and negative things)  I need to hold out my hand if a dog approaches a let the dog smell me or lick me or if I bring treats I need to give it a treat and talk nice to it.  I need to move very slowly to the door of the house.  We do carry pepper spray to spray dogs and we do have a legal right to do that but it is not good to do that because then you offend the owner of the home and you make the dog not like you even more, and if it doesn’t hurt the dog then you may get bit even worse.  As a mail man you really aren’t a threat to the home but the dog doesn’t know that, and your job may have required you to go there but if the dog won’t let you to the door then the owner of the home doesn’t get his package and it delays his blessing.  Some homeowners should keep their dogs tied up or at least train and discipline the dogs, then they would get their packages, but most don’t.

God showed me one day that it is the same way with churches, there is a parallel with being a mail man and being a prophet of prophetic in a church.  Just about every spirit filled church has people who are either prophetic or they think that they are and they believe that they are watch dogs for the church.  If you come there looking for a new church or visiting you will run into these watch dog people.  They a very territorial and believe that they are called to protect their church from bad spirits, false prophets or often times they just get very jealous of others.

When you run into them you need to be positive don’t show fear, don’t be negative.  You need to take it slow don’t go in the church like you are an authority and if they want to feel you out let them.  Give them compliments try to be their friend, again move very slowly or cautiously don’t go in there giving prophetic words or bragging about yourself or your gift.  And do not pray against them or lash out against them no matter what they do to you.  If they are still negative towards you just peacefully leave and find a new church, God may have called you to go there and be a blessing to the church but if the watch dogs won’t let you to the door then the churches blessing will just be delayed or maybe they won’t get it at all.  And it didn’t necessarily mean that you were really a threat it just meant that the watch dogs didn’t like you.  And some church leaders would solve this problem if they kept the watch dogs on a leash or trained and disciplined it but most churches don’t and the watch dog people do as they please and most run their masters the pastors of the church.  The watch dog people mean well and they believe they are serving God so please show them love and try and put yourself in their shoes. Often the watchdog person can be the pastor or church leaders.

You may also run into people in churches that believe themselves to be prophets who really think in their own mind that the church is only big enough for one prophet or prophetic person, they may get very jealous of you and try and find fault in everything you do and even make you look bad or try and oppress you and speak about you.  They can kind of be like the watch dog people but yet very different.  I am sure that many reading this book are immediately thinking of people they have met that fit this description but what I have found is that often God sets the conflict between you and them up in order to build character and humility in you and also to teach them a few things as well.  So don’t always be too quick to leave a church that has someone like this as God may have a plan in it, and who knows you may become good friends with this person latter on.

But in any case don’t expect that you will just walk in to a new church and not have problems, always count the costs of leaving your current church to join a new one especially if you where accepted as a prophet and a prophetic leader in your old church, in a new one you may not get that kind of authority back for many years as most churches will make you earn your credibility.

Also know that in the current way that the church is set up the pastor or apostle is the one running things so always remember that you are under his authority while in that church and should follow his rules or wishes.  But also know not to depend on a man or a pastor as that is just what he is, he is a man and has faults and may not be there forever.  God wants his people to be more dependant on Him rather than a man.  I once had a great pastor who was a wonderful man and I liked him a lot, the church was growing in leaps and bounds and we were in revival and were even in the middle of a building program because we out grew the old building.  But right in the midst of all this the pastor of this non-denominational charismatic church was diagnosed with ALS and had 3 years to live, he was only in his forties.  Well shortly after that the church split and finally ceased to exist all together.  The pastor who was an ORU grad and also a believer in the word of faith was not healed but passed away a few years later.  He was a good man and no more a sinner than anyone else but sometimes things happen and that is why it is so very important not to depend on a man.  More than often you will find people who will point to a man or the man himself will tell you just how much you are to submit to him and depend on him but if you are called to be a prophet of God or prophetic then you need to give him respect and fall under his authority in his church but don’t depend on him or make him more of an authority than God is.  Also don’t depend on your church as that too could be gone in the twinkling of an eye.

What Did the Book of Acts Church Look Like?

The church can be a very confusing place as there are so many different denominations and each believing something different.  Even in non-denominational churches we have so many different beliefs and each one is different.  So which church is right?  What should a church even look like and what should it include?  I think the best place to look would be in the Bible.

The Church of the New Testament started with a foundation which is faith in Christ.  Christ was and still is to be the head of the Church (Eph. 5:23).  Whether we look at its offices, beliefs or attitudes toward gentiles, he is at its very core. And a Church without Christ is not patterned after the New Testament Early Church.

When looking at the function of the early church we can probably sum most of it up in a couple of scripture verses, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Mat 28:18-20).  The function therefore was to go and preach the Gospel and make disciples, teaching them to obey Christ’s commands.

The early church was a church on the move, they were very “missionary minded” and evangelical.  If they had not been then they could not properly fulfill their intended function.

The early church had some of the same beliefs that we have today.  Their foundational belief was their faith in Jesus Christ, his deity, the atonement, and his resurrection.  They believed that he was the messiah.

They also believed in the sacraments of baptism, and communion, (1 Pet. 3:21) (1 Corth. 11:24-26).  They believed in consecration and sanctification, (1 Pet. 1:15-16) (1 John. 3:9-10).  They believed in missions and the spread of the Gospel.  They believed the scriptures were inspired and authoritive, (2 Tim. 3:16).  They believed in fellowship, unity and the assembling of themselves together, (Heb. 10:25).  They thought it a duty to give to the poor and needy, (Acts 24:17).  They believed in a local church government, (Eph. 4:11).

The early church also believed in the Jewish holidays and many of the Jewish customs and teachings.  The Passover was still observed and celebrated, as was the Nazarene vow, (Acts 18:18).  I have heard it taught that the reason there is little knowledge of the New Testament church is because the leaders of that church were Jewish and still followed much of the Jewish laws and customs.  And those customs and laws are in the Old Testament so it would not be necessary to include them in the New Testament.

The early church also believed in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Today many people want to get back to the way the early church was but if they deny the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit they will never accomplish their goal.

We as gentiles weren’t meant to be exactly like the early church because that would mean we would have to become Jewish  and according to scripture we are not commanded to obey the all the Jewish customs that the Jewish Christians obeyed (Acts 15:23).

The early church services were different than the old system of temple worship.  The services were more similar to the synagogue.  They met together either in their own homes or their own Christian synagogues.  They had fellowship and broke bread and prayed daily, sharing all they had with each other, (Acts 2:42).  During a service it would not be uncommon to ordain and send off missionaries, although this seems like a private service consisting only of leaders (Acts 13:2-3).  When they met together everyone participated, there were hymn’s, words of instruction, revelation and other supernatural gifts that would take part in the service (1 Corth. 14:26).  The early services had public reading of scripture and teaching as well as preaching (1 Tim 4:13). They had prayer because there is instruction on prayer (1 Corth. 11:4).  The early services most likely had leaders and overseer’s as well as deacons (Eph 4:11-12) (1 Tim 3:1-11).  Early services had order and structure, they were not chaotic, (1 Corth. 14:40).  There also was a collection taken for the needy as well as missionary activity, (1 Corth. 16:2).  Much like today they had communion in which they came together separately for, which is similar to today except it seemed that they made it separate occasion than other services, (1 Corth. 11:33).

The early church did have a government and leadership.  There were apostles, prophets, pastors/overseers (elder), evangelists, teachers, and deacons, (Eph 4:11) (1 Tim 3:1-11).   And there were standards for becoming a leader, 1 Tim 3:1-13, Titus 1:7-9, 2 Tim 2: 15-16, Acts 6:2-3.

The Apostle was the head of the government he established places of worship and had chief oversight and authority of those places.  The Apostle was most often a missionary and flowed in signs wonders and miracles, (2 Corth. 12:12).   An apostle was accountable to other apostles and the Jerusalem council.

The Prophet spoke forth revelation from God and was involved in the some administrative function such as in “Acts 13” the prophets laid hands on Paul and Barnabas and sent them off.  This is a clear distinction that Prophets had ecclesiastical authority and this is also strongly supported in the Old Testament.

The teacher had the authority of instruction in the word of God and I don’t think that it was uncommon for a teacher to be a “Pastor” or “Overseer.”  In which had over site of the local churches.  But a Pastor or overseer was still under the authority of the Apostle or a board of Apostles.  I think the Apostles and Prophets were much like an outside governing board, which together oversaw the functions of the local established church.  Although an Apostle or Prophet can also be a local overseer.  The overseers of a congregation had control of membership (1 Corth 5:5) (Mat 18:17).

The leadership had authority to select officers and deacons as well as Overseer’s of newly planted churches (Acts 6:3).

In church government there also were appointed Deacons.  The deacons were to help and relieve the Apostles and other leaders probably also the Overseer’s of secular duties, so more time can be devoted to the preaching and teaching of the Word.

There was a definite change in the attitudes toward gentile believers.  It was against the law for a Jew to associate with a gentile but Christ broke down that wall and he made it possible for the gentiles to be cleansed.  Peter a Jewish leader in the early church was given that revelation by God (Acts 10:28).  God also sent Paul to be a missionary to the Jews in which there were gentiles added to the congregations (Acts 15:23).  And it seemed that the gentile believers were not commanded to obey the all the Jewish customs.  They even called together a council to discuss the regulations of the gentile congregations, (Acts 15).

I have also read that the New Testament was written by Jews (which is a fact) and was also written to Jews.  Therefore the New Testament had a Jewish perspective and a Jewish intent.  But you don’t have to be a Jew to understand it or be part of it.

This is just a basic look at how the early church was and of what a New Testament church should be like.  God wants us to fellowship with other believers and we are to meet together in the type of church that I mentioned above, we aren’t to be alone in our walk with Christ, God is for the institution of the local church but sometimes local churches miss the mark and aren’t anything like what we read above, while there is really nothing that we can do about that we can still agree that according to scripture that if a church doesn’t have the ingredients of the early church then it is not a Biblically based church and not done according to scripture.  Also note that a church is meant to be a family and to be about building relationships with other believers as well as to be encouraged to live a changed life in Jesus Christ and see it modeled to others by leadership.

In the book of acts church there was a place and purpose for prophets and the prophetic, today this is rarely seen and a prophetic person will have a hard time trying to find their place or maybe even face ridicule from others that don’t believe that the prophet has a place but rest assure according to scripture there is a purpose and place for the prophetic it is just that most churches cant seem to see that yet.

If you go to a church and they don’t include any of these things then I encourage you not give up and quit the church all together but to find one that does or even start one that does.  And there is nothing wrong with home churches or fellowships.  You can gather with a few people and that is just fine.  You don’t need to be in a big church building to have a service.

The New Prophetic Church

Since the prophetic movement in the 1980s there has been an increase in the amount of people in a church who feel that they are prophetic and who feel that they are Prophets.  The thing is many find out that they are prophetic and they think that that then makes them a Prophet, but the Prophet is an office (Eph 4:11),  and apostle Paul said that not all are Prophets (1 Cor. 12:29).  But we seem to have an abundance of prophetic people in the church and it seems to keep growing.

I had a dream that God was emerging the prophetic into the church (which he has been doing) even to the traditional denominations and his plan for it was for everyone in the churches to be prophetic, and the people who weren’t prophetic weren’t in the church anymore.

This may not sound like such a great thing for the Itinerant Prophet or any Itinerant minister for that matter because if everyone in a church was prophetic then they wouldn’t need other prophetic people to come in, and if everyone was spiritually sensitive and in tune then there would be no need for someone else to come in to share fresh teaching or to bring revival, every one would already be in revival. As a matter of fact some churches are already embracing this including my own, the Apostle and Pastor of the church I attend said that we have no need to bring in any other prophets or speakers because we already have our own.  We have a few different Prophets at our church and we also have prophetic people in our church.  Again if this happens we will see more of this and the day of the Itinerant Minister as we know it may change.

The church would be full of spiritually sensitive people who are in tune with God and unified, no more will there be people who just don’t get it or people who have no relationship with God trying to run the church, God would be very free to move and do what he wants to do.

Let me also clarify something, when I say prophetic I mean people who are full of the spirit of God and are spiritually sensitive.  From the time of Acts 2 till now God has offered to fill us with his spirit, to Baptize us with the spirit, this is available to all believers and has been for a while and the Bible says it is; Acts 2:17-18

17 "'In the last days, God says,

I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants, both men and women,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

and they will prophesy.

NIV

In context in Joel which it is quoted from, the people he will pour his spirit on are his servants or the saints, and it said all of them- male and female, young and old.  And the result is prophesy, dreams and visions, also in the context of acts the result is the gift of tongues as a sign, considering this and other passages about the gifts of the spirit it is evident that signs and wonders and gifts of healing also will accompany the result.  But again prophecy, dreams and visions sure sound like what we call the prophetic –this is available to all( 1 Cor 14:1,5).  We also know according to scripture that we all are to worship God in spirit (Jhn 4:23,24), being sensitive to God and worshiping in the spirit is also a trademark of someone that we might say is prophetic but God wants all of us to be like this.  And God wants all of us to hear his voice and minister to others, and to be led of the spirit and to have the gift of discernment.  So maybe it is not so absurd to believe that Gods plan is for everyone in the church to be prophetic.

Again being prophetic does not make someone a prophet, a prophet is a God Ordained office (Eph 4:11), so there will be and there is people who may have their role in the church a little confused.  Also as more and more prophetic people emerge in the church it is ever more important to rightly divide the Word of Truth (The Holy Bible), and it will be increasingly necessary for God to raise up very strong leaders to guide these people, leaders who are strong in Character, Faith and Love, Leaders who walk a very close walk with God and who are very strong in the Word of God rightly dividing it.

The fruit of this will be wonderful; the church will be walking in the spirit and walking in the power and authority of God.

I am not saying that this will happen or that I know for sure that this is what God is doing but it would make sense, it is Biblical and it is the direction that I see him moving towards or at least the direction that I see him wanting us to go.

Who knows in 10 years from now the church may look a whole lot different and similar to the above dream, I guess the thing to remember is that God can change things and not to get so used to the way things are now that if change comes you are against it.

I pray that we are always open to change and would not put God in a box, Amen!
