Not all Prophetic Words and Spiritual Readings Predict the Future
Many people seek prophetic words and spiritual readings for many reasons often times to find out ones future while the prophetic can often tell of the future of ones life we need to remember that people have free will. Basically that means your future is always changing depending on you and others, but mainly it depends on you. Many people receive spiritual readings and are told things that definitely seem like they will happen but often it doesn’t because they stopped or changed something in their life which worked against what was supposed to happen. Lets say you received a word or reading that told of you becoming mayor of your city and at that time you were already on city council and thinking of running for mayor but then because of certain factors you decided to start doing some illegal drugs and then got caught blowing your chances of becoming mayor. That didn’t mean that the prophetic words you received was wrong it only meant that you changed things by doing illegal drugs and chose a path contrary to the one you could have been on. It is the same with other things in life, your future depends on what choices you make on a daily basis. God works all things out for good and can still make the best of wrong choices but your choices change things. Also know that not all prophetic words or spiritual readings pertain to your future, some things may be about the past or present and often are.
Is the Prophetic and Spiritual Readings Valid Today
There are a lot of Christians who do not believe that the prophetic words and the gifts of prophecy exist today they believe that the gifts of the spirit or the sign gifts have ceased; to be honest there is no scriptural basis for a cesationalist's view. There is only one main scripture verse that is used for that basis and it is taken out of context.
The main scripture that cesationalists use is;
1 Cor 13:8-10
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
NIV
They say that according to that scripture the gifts ceased including prophecy but they are actually taking it out of context. Paul who wrote the letter to the Corinthians was trying to get it across to them that love is the most important thing more important than gifts. And it says that when perfection comes the imperfect disappears but perfection has not come yet so gifts can’t disappear yet and haven’t ceased. Perfection won’t take place until after Jesus comes back.
There are many scriptures that support the gifts being active today, Some of those verses include:
1 Cor 12:1-11
12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
NIV
1 Cor 12:27-31
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.
NIV
1 Cor 14:1-5
14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
NIV
1 Cor 14:26-33
26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three — should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
NIV
Eph 4:11-13
11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
NIV
Acts 2:17-18
7 "'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
NIV
People have done many teachings on some of the above verses and even developed names and categories for the gifts of the spirit such as the word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, the gift of discerning of spirits, the gift of faith, the gift of working of miracles, gift of healing, gift of prophecy, the gift of tongues, and interpretation of tongues. But we can’t just confine Gods gifts into categories and put limits on them so I am not going to go into an in-depth teaching about the traditional nine gifts of the spirit and dissect them but I can tell you that when doing prophetic ministry and or spiritual readings the following gifts are used:
Words of Knowledge
Word of Wisdom
Discerning of Spirits
Gift of Prophecy
You can also see a lot of examples of how the Old Testament prophets used to minister to people which included inquiring of the local seer as to location of lost items and info.
Prophetic Words or Spiritual Readings Aren’t always 100% accurate
You may come across people who say that a prophet needs to be 100% accurate but that was a standard only for Old Testament prophets. It says of New Testament prophecy;
1 Cor 14:29
29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said
NIV
It says for other prophets to judge the word not that it has to be 100% accurate and that there is no fallibility. In this age of grace the Holy Spirit is our teacher and as a student we will make mistakes. Any gift that is used through a human is not going to be perfect.
